Concrete Crack Injection - Why to Choose It - IdeaMarketers.com

Having a professional inspect the basement inside and out will give the homeowner a chance to get a leg up on repairing any leaks or drainage problems that may be discovered during the inspection. There may be several options available to stop any leaks and prevent them in the future. Small basement leaks that only occur occasionally may require minimum attention to eradicate them, whereas major issues may take extensive repairs to resolve.

The ways water enters your basement can vary greatly, along with the reasons for it to occur. Having a leaking basement during heavy rains and spring thaws doesn't necessarily indicate severe problem. The cause could simply be incoming pipes or other structural holes in the walls that need to be sealed. Even cracks that appear in the walls may be sealed using high pressure concrete crack injection methods.

Not all cracks in basement walls are caused by foundation issues, as some may simply be the normal settling that occurs. Poured concrete walls can develop cracks in this manner that have a tendency to leak, especially during heavy rainfall periods. If the leak is more serious, other methods of stopping them may need to be considered.

This can be a more economical solution than waterproofing the entire basement structure when the problems are in a small area. The process takes less than a week to complete, and is waterproofed and sealed when fully cured and dried. Small openings and even some larger cracks can be filled with this method solving the infrequent leaking, and preventing further damage to the basement.

Once completed, the walls can then be finished, adding extra living or storage space to the home.

The Process

The process itself is relatively simple, and little mess is created while it is being done.

  • Temporary surface bond is applied, to seal in the crack filling material while it cures
  • Holes are then created to line up at an angle with the cracks so the material can be injected
  • Ports for use while filling are then inserted into the holes that were drilled
  • High pressure sealant is then injected from bottom port to top, filling in the entire crack
  • Ports and temporary bond are left in place up to 48 hours to allow sealant to cure
  • Ports are then removed, and surface bond also

At the conclusion of the cure time, the sealant material has expanded and dried to completely fill in and waterproof the cracks and pipe openings. The surface bond material removes easily and the walls can then be painted or finished as the home owner sees fit.

One of the main reasons for choosing this method is the savings involved. For relatively minor leaks, this method can be very cost effective, and does not require digging around the foundation to apply sealant to the entire outer walls.

Time savings are another valid reason to choose crack injection sealants, since they are quick to use, and cure in a short period of time compared to sealing the entire basement. For minor leaks it is the ideal solution to keep the damage to a minimum and prevent more serious issues from developing.

(AP) ? Colombia's FARC rebels are asking France's new Socialist president for help in facilitating talks with their country's government, according to a French journalist freed from captivity in the Colombian jungles.

Romeo Langlois arrived in Paris on Friday to be reunited with his family and will meet with French President Francois Hollande. The 35-year-old had been held by leftist rebels for a month and was released Wednesday.

Langlois, an independent journalist on assignment for France 24 television, said the FARC used his kidnapping to show the world that they are still active despite Colombian military efforts to wipe them out.

The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC by their Spanish acronym, says it is a peasant-based army that is fighting for a more equal distribution of wealth, particularly of Colombia's land, which is concentrated in the hands of very few.

Two major government-FARC peace negotiations have failed over the past three decades.

The rebels gave him a letter to pass on to Hollande, and it includes a request "to ask France to continue to play its role as a friend of Colombia to help in trying to negotiate," Langlois told reporters in Paris.

"The FARC, who I think really want a negotiated solution, are obliged to kidnap people to attract attention. Not only to themselves, but ... as a reminder that there is an extremely serious conflict," Langlois said.

"They are hoping that a lot of European countries, of course including France, will help the parties to lower the tensions," he said. "There is a lot of hate."

He described his kidnapping as a "tough blow for the Colombian government" and those who say the rebels have been defanged and security restored.

He said he was treated well by his kidnappers, but firmly denied being a rebel spokesman. He criticized the FARC for using his capture for propaganda purposes.

The journalist was accompanying Colombian soldiers on a cocaine-lab destruction mission on April 28 when rebels attacked. Four security force members were killed and Langlois was wounded in the arm. He fled into rebel hands.

The rebels criticized him in one communique as lending himself to government propaganda by accompanying the military.

Langlois, who has spent years covering Colombia and its conflicts, said he will go back to work there despite the kidnapping.

Children's Health & Fitness ? Communities Asked To Help Fight ...

June 1st, 2012 by Len Saunders

From Newswise?..

National data show that currently more than 10 percent of preschoolers in the United States are obese, and an additional 10 percent are overweight. In a recently published article, a researcher from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, in collaboration with peers and colleagues from across the nation, says that effective strategies to target pregnancy, infancy, and toddlers are urgently needed to stop the progression of childhood obesity. The call to action comes just weeks after the release of a recent report from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and an HBO documentary, ?The Weight of the Nation,? both of which focused on the nation?s growing obesity epidemic. The full text of the article is available in the June issue of Childhood Obesity.

The authors point to evidence which shows that over the past several generations behavioral and societal changes have led to the obesity epidemic, with attendant health and economic consequences demanding new scientific approaches, policy, and actions. Obesity, they say, is a complex problem involving multiple factors including the family, community structures and services, and broad societal forces. That these contributors are interrelated only adds complexity to the issue, which ultimately results in a growing epidemic.

?A systems approach would link interventions in a variety of settings and take into account both behavioral and environmental factors. The importance of taking a broader look at these factors is further evidenced by the recent IOM report which provides a road map for how we can continue to make progress in preventing obesity,? said Shiriki Kumanyika, PhD, MPH, professor of Epidemiology at Penn Medicine. ?In this article, we propose an ambitious but achievable approach that focuses on tackling obesity at the earliest stages of life, and within the larger community, not just at the individual level.?

New research shows runners can improve health and performance with less training

Thursday, May 31, 2012

The new 10-20-30 training concept can improve both a person's running performance and health, despite a significant reduction in the total amount of training. This is the conclusion of a study from University of Copenhagen researchers just published in the renowned scientific Journal of Applied of Physiology.

Over the course of seven weeks, runners were able to improve performance on a 1500-metre run by 23 seconds and almost by a minute on a 5-km run ? and this despite a 50 per cent reduction in their total amount of training. These are just some of the results from a research project involving 18 moderately trained runners following the 10-20-30 training concept developed by researchers from the Department of Exercise and Sport Sciences at the University of Copenhagen.

In addition to enhancing running performance, the runners from the project also had a significant decrease in blood pressure and a reduction in cholesterol in the blood.

"We were very surprised to see such an improvement in the health profile considering that the participants have been running for several years," says Professor Jens Bangsbo, Department of Exercise and Sport Sciences, who heads the project.

"The results show that the very intense training has a great potential for improving health status of already trained individuals," says Professor Bangsbo.

PhD student Thomas Gunnarsson adds that the emotional well-being of the participants also improved over the span of the project.

"We found a reduction in emotional stress when compared to control subjects continuing their normal training based on a recovery-stress questionnaire administered before and after the 7-week training period," explains Gunnarsson.

The 10-20-30 training concept

The 10-20-30 training concept consists of a 1-km warm-up at a low intensity followed by 3-4 blocks of 5 minutes running interspersed by 2 minutes of rest. Each block consists of 5 consecutive 1-minute intervals divided into 30, 20 and 10 seconds of running at a low, moderate and near maximal intensity, respectively.

30 minutes is all you need

According to Professor Bangsbo, the 10-20-30 training concept is easily adapted in a busy daily schedule as the time needed for training is low. A total of 20-30 minutes including warm-up is all that is needed. Since the 10-20-30 concept deals with relative speeds and includes low speed running and 2-minute rest periods, individuals with different fitness levels and training backgrounds can perform the 10-20-30 training together.

"The training was very inspiring. I could not wait to get out and run together with the others. Today, I am running much faster than I ever thought possible," says Katrine Dahl, one of the participants in the study.
