Queen's honors list includes actress Bonham Carter (AP)

LONDON ? Oscar-nominated actress Helena Bonham Carter, famed for playing quirky characters as well as British royalty, joins a former prisoner, a reality TV guru and several Olympics organizers on the list of people being awarded honors by Queen Elizabeth II this New Year.

Bonham Carter missed out on the best supporting actress Oscar for her role as Queen Elizabeth, the supportive wife of King George VI in "The King's Speech." Her other major roles have included characters in films such as "Planet of the Apes" and "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory."

The queen, who is the daughter of King George VI and Elizabeth, awarded Bonham Carter a CBE, short for Commanders of the Order of the British Empire. Bonham Carter has said she is dedicating the CBE to her late father.

Businessman Gerald Ronson, who was convicted in 1990 for a share-trading scandal and served six months of a one-year jail sentence, was awarded a CBE for his services to charity. Ronson fought a long legal battle to clear his name, and although the European Court of Human Rights later ruled his trial was unfair but Britain's highest appeal court never overturned his conviction. He now runs property company Heron International and is a leading philanthropist.

Peter Bazalgette, who brought the show "Big Brother" to the U.K. and devised a string of much-copied lifestyle and reality shows, was made a knight. Professor Geoffrey Hill, who has been described as the greatest living poet in the English language, also became a knight.

Britain's honors are bestowed twice a year by the monarch ? at New Year's and on her official birthday in June. Recipients are selected by committees of civil servants from nominations made by the government and the public.

In descending order, the honors are knighthoods, CBE, OBE ? an Officer of the Order of the British Empire_ and MBE ? Member of the Order of the British Empire. Knights are addressed as "sir" or "dame." Recipients of the other honors have no title but can put the letters after their names.

The queen or occasionally another member of the royal family presents the award at a ceremony known as an "investiture." Several investitures are held at Buckingham Palace in London throughout the year.

Most of the honors go to people who are not in the limelight, for services to community or industry, but they also reward a sprinkling of famous faces.

As Britain prepares for the 2012 London Olympics, several organizers were recognized for their work.

John Armitt, chairman of the Olympic Delivery Authority, which is building the venues and infrastructure of the games, was made a knight for services to engineering and construction. Charles Allen, who is in charge of making sure the whole country benefits from the games, was also made a knight. Howard Shiplee, director of construction at the ODA, was made a CBE.

Record producer Steve Lillywhite who worked with rock groups such as U2, The Rolling Stones and The Smiths was awarded a CBE for services to music.

Sky News journalist Alex Crawford, who filmed from a newly liberated Tripoli after traveling there with Libyan fighters who had overthrown Moammar Gadhafi's regime, was awarded an OBE, or an Officer of the Order of the British Empire.

Wedding Recap: Wedding Party

30 Dec

Our ?wedding party was the best!

Just as I wrote of?how wonderful my bridesmaids were, the same could be said for Adam?s groomsmen. They were attentive, hilarious, easy going and supportive all day long.

Made up of siblings and close friends, there was no other group I?d have wanted standing in support of the commitment Adam and I were about to make to one another than this.

They were willing to hold one of several bunting banners my mom made for our wedding day?

Willing to stand in rocky alley way terrain for a less traditional photo-op?

Willing to wear matching shoes and socks?

Willing to put up with Adam?s excitement?

And, most of all, willing to put up with our shameless displays of affection in the moments leading up to the ceremony?

NFL Player's Wife Dies of Cancer One Month After Wedding

(Editor's Note: Professional athletes often make news for off-court antics that aren't exactly flattering. They sometimes think they're above the law and are cited for everything from packing a gun, to driving under the influence to sexual assault (not naming names here). But there are good guys too and former NFL player Chris Draft is clearly one of them.? Nordette's post profiles more of a love story than a sports story - but one that transcends time and will touch your heart on so many levels. ~js)

I discovered this true love story through a friend who shared it on Facebook via Clutch Magazine. The couple in the video, LaKeasha Monique Rutledge-Draft and NFL free agent Chris Draft were married on November 27, 2011, and one month later, December 27, Keasha died from cancer.

Cloth iPhone app creates a photo catalog of your sartorial selections (Appolicious)

Gone are the days of longing for your own digital closet. Cloth is the latest clothing-cataloging app for iPhone and iPod Touch, offering a simple, user-friendly interface for the current on-sale price of 99 cents.

Although I wouldn?t normally spend money on an app of this sort, what I do like about Cloth is that it requires no account or registration to use its service. The app?s premise is basic: Take a photo of your outfit of the day, write yourself a note, and tag the outfit with whatever words you like. You can select a category for the outfit, such as everyday, vacation or work, or tap the ?Love It? button to add the OOTD to your favorites list. Cloth will store your image and notes, as well as filter the outfit into its respective categories for later looks. Cloth also offers built-in sharing to Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr, as long as you?ve provided your credentials in the in-app settings panel.

There?s a game aspect to Cloth, which provides points and badges for continued use of the app and for sharing outfits across social media. Although I?m sure reward-hungry users will get some satisfaction from becoming a Cloth King or Twitter Tycoon, I see little point in this feature.

I?m also surprised that the Clothapp blog isn?t better built in to the Cloth app itself. When users upload a photo to Cloth, they can opt to send the image to the Cloth blog, which displays all of the user-provided images. You can only access this from the ?Visit Clothapp.com? button in the app?s settings panel, which opens a non-iPhone optimized version of the site. Yes, the point of this app is personal cataloging, but much of the fun of taking the time to photograph your OOTD is in seeing what others are wearing, too.

Cloth makes the claim it?ll ?Unlock your closet.? I?m not entirely convinced fashionistas will flock to the service, but Cloth?s ease of use and smart interface means users will get what they pay for, at the minimum.

Intel Thunderbolt may reach Windows in April with Apple help

Thunderbolt said ready to go for April

Intel's Thunderbolt for Windows PCs could arrive in April, purported insiders stated Monday night. Apple is reportedly helping Intel adopt the standard the two co-created, Digitimes heard. PC builders ASUS and Sony, as well as mainboard builders ASRock and Gigabyte, are expected to be part of the first wave.

Apple is believed to have achieved Intel's hoped-for goal of building an ecosystem of demand and accessories. The expansion would help overcome some of the trepidation over the standard, where a Thunderbolt controller chip is believed to cost over $20 where USB 3.0 is much cheaper.

Thunderbolt was developed partly at Apple's prompting to develop a very high-speed yet small cable that could also merge the display signal. Although few devices exist that use it, it has given Apple an advantage where even a MacBook Air can use a multi-disk external RAID drive as quickly as it could if it were an internal drive. USB 3.0 is less expensive but has half the effective bandwidth and isn't officially meant to drive more than data, although it can be used for video.

An April target may be a clue as to when the first Ivy Bridge chips are in the market in earnest. Intel rarely launches chipsets and their processors separately.

Afghanistan, China sign first oil contract (AP)

KABUL, Afghanistan ? Afghanistan's government signed a deal Wednesday with China's state-owned National Petroleum Corporation, allowing it to become the first foreign company to exploit the country's oil and natural gas reserves.

The contract, which covers the northeastern provinces of Sari Pul and Faryab, is the first of several such blocks to be put on the market in coming months, Afghan Minister of Mines Wahidullah Shahrani said during the signing ceremony.

Bidding information for blocks in neighboring Balkh province will be released at the end of February, and for the western Herat province by next summer, he said.

Afghanistan has been seeking to find ways to exploit some of its mineral wealth to offset the loss of revenues when foreign aid and spending drops when international combat troops leave by the end of 2014. The government has been keen to develop an oil-extraction and refining capability for the landlocked nation, which is entirely reliant on fuel imports from neighboring Iran and Central Asian nations.

"This will bring enormous financial benefits to the government," Shahrani said. "It will be an important step toward self-sufficiency."

The ministry listed the initial value of the project with CNPC as $700 million. But the total could be ten times greater if more reserves are found and developed, and if international oil prices remain at today's levels, Shahrani said.

The fuel pact allows the Chinese firm to research oil and natural gas blocks in Sari Pul and Faryab, an area known as the Amu Darya River Basin that was first explored by Soviet engineers in the 1960s. The Soviets estimated the reserves at about 87 million barrels, but both the Afghan and Chinese partners believe they will prove to be much larger.

CNPC will also build a refinery ? Afghanistan's first ? within the next three years, after the real size of the reserves is established with greater accuracy, said Lu Gong Xun, president of CNPC's international branch.

Shahrani said the deal calls for the Afghan government to receive 70 percent of the profits from the sale of the oil and natural gas. CNPC will also pay 15 percent in royalties, as well as corporate taxes and rent for the land used for its operations.

Afghanistan's army and police will set up special units to guard the project, Shahrani said.

The provinces of Sari Pul and Faryab are located hundreds of miles from the centers of fighting in the east and southeast and are considered relatively safe. As a result, the U.S.-led NATO force has already transferred or is turning over responsibility for security in large parts of the region to the Afghan army and police.

Surveys conducted by the Soviets have shown that Afghanistan sits on vast mineral wealth. Afghan and foreign companies already have shown interest, notably in its untapped copper, iron and oil deposits. But with poor infrastructure and security problems stemming from the 10-year war, most Western mining companies have shied away from firm commitments.

So far, companies from China ? with which Afghanistan shares a small stretch of border in its east ? have been in the forefront of investments in the nation.

Three years ago the China Metallurgical Construction Co. signed a contract to develop the Aynak copper mine in Logar province. Beijing's $3.5 billion stake in the mine is the largest foreign investment in Afghanistan so far.

The U.S. Defense Department has put a $1 trillion price tag on Afghanistan's mineral reserves. Other estimates have pegged it at $3 trillion or more.

But the potential windfall for the landlocked country will require international investment, a better transportation network and much improved security.

"This government must stand on its feet," said Mustafa Zahir, the head of the government's environment agency. "Without using our natural resources we cannot achieve this."

Swedish reporters sentenced to 11 yrs in Ethiopia

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) ? A court in Ethiopia on Tuesday sentenced two Swedish journalists to 11 years in prison on charges of supporting terrorism after the two illegally entered the country with an ethnic Somali rebel group in a case that has been criticized by media rights groups.

Judge Shemsu Sirgaga ruled that the two freelance journalists ? Johan Persson and Martin Schibbye ? will serve "rigorous imprisonment" following their convictions last week.

Ethiopian troops had captured Persson and Schibbye six months ago during a clash with rebels in eastern Ethiopia's restive Somali region, a no-go area for reporters. Ethiopia considers the rebel group a terrorist organization, and it is very difficult for journalists to gain access to the region. Rights groups say that is so abuses there are not exposed.

The judge has accused the Ogaden National Liberation Front ? or ONLF ? of organizing the Swedes' journey starting in London. Outlawed groups in many countries frequently facilitate the travels of reporters in order to have their version of events told.

There was no visible reaction to the sentencing from the two journalists. The defendants' lawyers plan to hold a meeting at the Swedish Embassy later Tuesday to discuss the possibility of an appeal.

In Sweden, Foreign Ministry spokesman Anders Jorle called the sentencing expected but regrettable. He said Sweden has been in contact with the Ethiopian government over the court case "at a high level."

Their Swedish lawyer, Thomas Olsson, could not be immediately reached for comment but told national broadcaster SVT that the sentence was a disappointment, but that he and his clients had not yet decided if they would appeal.

"We will try to adjust to the new situation and help them as much as possible," he said, noting that an appeal can take up to two years and that the alternative would be for them to try to get pardoned.

"The latter means that they have to confess to these crimes and apologize, which of course is a hard thing to do when you regard yourself innocent. That's why an appeal is natural, but it's a tough decision. That's what Martin and Johan are up against in the coming 15 days," Olsson said.

Persson and Schibbye are both freelance contributors to the Sweden-based photojournalism agency Kontinent. Schibbye is also a writer. The two regularly had their work published in national newspapers in Sweden and Norway.

The pair said they had been gathering news about a Swedish oil company that is exploring Ethiopia's Somali region for oil. Sweden's foreign minister, Carl Bildt, was a member of the board of the company ? Lundin Petroleum ? between 2000 and 2006, and left the board when he was appointed foreign minister.

Persson and Schibbye have acknowledged that they entered Ethiopia illegally.

Jonas Nordling, chairman of The Swedish Union of Journalists, called Tuesday's sentencing "a setback for journalism, and it's a personal tragedy for Martin and Johan and their families. We will do all we can to support them."

"It's clear that it's a political sentence. A heavy responsibility now lies on the Swedish government to solve this on a political level," he said, noting that the freedom of the press must be protected and defended.

Swedish government officials have said that the two Swedes were on a "journalistic mission," and have pushed for the two to be freed.

The international community has closely followed the terror trial against the Swedes. Rights groups and diplomats say Ethiopia's anti-terrorism proclamation restricts freedom of expression and is used as a tool to crack down on dissent.

Amnesty International said it believes the two Swedes are "prisoners of conscience, prosecuted because of their legitimate work."

NYT: Shopping While Intoxicated nets online gains

After enjoying a few drinks, some people go dancing. Others order food. And for some, it?s time to shop online.

?I have my account linked to my phone, so it?s really easy,? said Tiffany Whitten, of Dayton, Ohio, whose most recent tipsy purchase made on her smartphone ? a phone cover ? arrived from Amazon much to her surprise. ?I was drunk and I bought it, and I forgot about it, and it showed up in the mail, and I was really excited.?

Shopping under the influence has long benefited high-end specialty retailers ? witness the wine-and-cheese parties that are a staple of galleries and boutiques. Now the popularity of Internet sales has opened alcohol-induced purchases to the masses, including people like Ms. Whitten, who works in shipping and receiving and spent just $5 on the cat-shaped phone cover.

Chris Tansey, an accountant in Australia, went shopping online after drinking late one night (to be precise, it was well into the morning). By the end of the session, he had bought a $10,000 motorcycle tour of New Zealand.

?The hang-ups of spending your hard-earned cash are so far removed from your life when you?ve had a bottle of wine,? Mr. Tansey said in an e-mail. The New Zealand trip was terrific, he said. But a pair of $3 sunglasses on eBay ?turned out to be horrible fakes, with $17 of postage that I obviously didn?t see with beer goggles.?

Story: Stores, downturn create new kinds of shoppers

Online retailers, of course, can never be sure whether customers are inebriated when they tap the ?checkout? icon. One comparison-shopping site, Kelkoo, said almost half the people it surveyed in Britain, where it is based, had shopped online after drinking.

But while reliable data is hard to come by, retailers say they have their suspicions based on anecdotal evidence and traffic patterns on their Web sites ? and some are adjusting their promotions accordingly.

?Post-bar, inhibitions can be impacted, and that can cause shopping, and hopefully healthy impulse buying,? said Andy Page, the president of Gilt Groupe, an online retailer that is adding more sales starting at 9 p.m. to respond to high traffic then ? perhaps some of it by shoppers under the influence.

On eBay, the busiest time of day is from 6:30 to 10:30 in each time zone. Asked if drinking might be a factor, Steve Yankovich, vice president for mobile for eBay, said, ?Absolutely.? He added: ?I mean, if you think about what most people do when they get home from work in the evening, it?s decompression time. The consumer?s in a good mood.?

Story: Online shopping up 16.4 percent on Christmas

Nighttime shopping is growing over all. ChannelAdvisor, which runs e-commerce for hundreds of sites, says its order volumes peak about 8 p.m., and that shoppers are placing orders later and later: in 2011, the number of orders placed from 9 to midnight increased compared with previous years.

A recent array of nighttime offers sent to a shopper?s e-mail inbox included: from 6 to 9 p.m., a limited-quantity sale on fashions at Neiman Marcus; at 7:38 p.m., a promotion for three-day stays at Loews hotels; at 8:44 p.m., a promotion by Gilt for macaroons and faux-fur blankets; and at 2:23 a.m., an offer by Saks for a $2,000 gift card with purchase.

At QVC, the television shopping channel, traffic and viewers rise around noon, then quiet down until after 7 p.m. Then items like cosmetics and accessories sell briskly. ?Call them girl treats ? they seem to attract a really strong following once you get past dinnertime,? said Doug Rose, senior vice president for multichannel programming and marketing for the company. ?You can probably come to your own conclusion as to what?s motivating her.?

Still, the nighttime spike requires delicacy among retailers: for reasons of propriety, they do not want to be seen as encouraging drunken shopping, and many people who inadvertently buy products in that state would most likely return them at high rates. On the other hand, a happy customer can lead to higher sales.

?In a shopping context, alcohol would lift people?s moods and make them feel more relaxed,? said Nancy Puccinelli, an associate fellow at the Oxford?s Sa?d Business School who studies consumer behavior. ?If we see a product and we feel good, we will evaluate the product more positively.?

Alcohol-fueled purchases, however, could lead to problems, she said. Even with online retailers storing credit card information and offering one-click checkout, alcohol reduces working memory, which means ?at the time of purchase, you wouldn?t have the cognitive ability to think through. If you think about a sweater: is this the right size, is it the right color,? she said.

Kristin A. Kassaw, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral science at Baylor, said online shopping while drunk could have serious financial consequences.

?When you?re loading things you can?t feel or touch into this fake cart, you don?t have a sense of, ?I?m buying all this stuff, I?m buying too much.? It takes you away from the actual spending-money experience,? she said.

In actual stores, despite the longer hours around the holidays, intoxicated shoppers seem to be rare ? but when they do appear, they can be quite disruptive.

On Thanksgiving night around 11 p.m., a shopper at a Walmart in Florence, Ala., was stumbling in the aisles and grabbing onto items; police officers shot him with a stun gun and charged him with public intoxication. At a Best Buy in Lufkin, Tex., a drunken man disappeared into a bathroom around 4 a.m. on Black Friday and tried to flush a cable down the toilet, apparently to avoid being caught shoplifting.

And in Scarborough, Me., early on the Friday after Thanksgiving, a man was arrested as he drove out of a Cabela?s parking lot, where he had ostensibly been drinking all night as he waited for the store to open.

Amanda Schuster, a wine-and-spirits writer and consultant in Brooklyn, says she never shops in actual stores after drinking, but she finds it hard to resist the Web. ?It feels productive in a way ? like I didn?t just come home drunk and pass out, I went home and did something,? she said.

That something tends to be buying used CDs at Amazon. When an unexpected package shows up, ?I try to backtrack a little bit, and I look in to my purchasing history, and I?m like, oh, yeah,? she said.

Regrets? She has a few.

?When did I get ?Heart?s Greatest Hits??? she said.

Analysis: Caution mutes US response to NKorea

(AP Photo/ Lee Jin-man)

(AP) ? The Obama administration's cautious response to the death of North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il reflects unease and uncertainty about the leadership transition in the reclusive country that has confounded U.S. presidents since Harry S. Truman.

For the past 60 years, the "hermit kingdom" has vexed the United States and its allies with war, nuclear tests, missile launches, belligerence and bellicose bombast. But since he took office, President Barack Obama has had to deal with the country at perhaps its most secretive point: an unclear succession at the very top at a time of deep concern about the stability of the regime.

Thus, the administration's carefully worded public messages have underscored the administration's desire for better relations with the autocratic nation and its concern about the welfare of the North Korean people. They are also gentle reminders that Washington expects Pyongyang to follow through on denuclearization pledges and improve ties with its neighbors, particularly South Korea.

The kid gloves treatment accorded to the North's youthful new leader, Kim's twenty-something son Kim Jong Un, has attracted criticism from some who see this is a moment to make a forceful case for dramatic reform and regime change.

But without solid intelligence of the opaque transition process and fearful of misunderstandings that could lead to provocations with the notoriously erratic North, U.S. officials concluded that the best course is to say little, wait and watch.

Indeed, the administration's initial reactions to Kim's death have contained little substance at all and were couched in niceties.

"All I can say is that we're monitoring the situation closely," White House press secretary Jay Carney said on Wednesday as North Korean state media broadcast pictures of wailing mourners, apparently overcome with grief. "Kim Jong Il had designated Kim Jong Un as his official successor, and at this time we have no indication that that has changed."

Carney added: "We hope that the new North Korean leadership will take the steps necessary to support peace, prosperity and a better future for the North Korean people, including through acting on its commitments to denuclearization."

Those comments echoed words from Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. On Monday, more than 16 hours after Kim's death was announced, she was the first senior U.S. official to comment publicly on the developments. In intentionally vague comments, she called for "a peaceful and stable transition in North Korea" and expressed hope that it would not affect "regional peace and stability."

Ironically, it was Clinton who first stirred the pot about a possible succession crisis in North Korea.

Nearly three years ago, on her first trip to Asia as secretary of state, she stunned diplomatic circles with a frank appraisal of U.S. concerns amid rampant speculation about the health of Kim Jong Il, who had suffered a stroke in 2008, and his choice of a successor.

"If there is a succession, even if it's a peaceful succession, that creates more uncertainty and it also may encourage behaviors that are even more provocative as a way to consolidate power within the society," Clinton told reporters on her way to South Korea on Feb. 20, 2009.

Her remarks on a previously taboo subject sparked great debate. In Seoul the next day, she expressed surprise at the uproar, noting that reports of Kim choosing his youngest son Kim Jung Un to succeed him had "been in the news for months."

"I don't think that it's a forbidden subject to talk about succession in the hermit kingdom," Clinton said. "In fact, it seems to me it's got to be factored into any policy review that one is undertaking. ... I think it would be irresponsible for it not to be factored into what you were thinking about."

That same month, U.S. diplomats were scrambling to collect any information they could about Kim Jong Un from South Korean, Chinese and Japanese officials and experts, according to leaked State Department cables published by WikiLeaks.

Unfortunately for the Americans, their interlocutors had sharply divided opinions, according to the cables. Some predicted the North Korean regime would collapse politically within two to three years of Kim Jong Il's death. Others foresaw a power struggle between the young and untested Kim Jong Un and rivals in the elite but differed over who would prevail. Others believed there would be little change.

One apparent area of convergence, however, was that most South Korean experts believed the challenge for the younger Kim would come after his father's death.

Thus, as North Korea's transition is under way, the lack of clarity has put U.S. policy on hold.

Before Kim's passing, the administration had been expected this week to announce the resumption in food aid to North Korea and a potential bilateral meeting on nuclear disarmament. Although the State Department said there had been brief exchange with North Korean officials in New York on Monday, both initiatives are now in flux pending the end of the North's mourning period.

The administration says it is respecting that mourning period by understanding that North Korean officials will not be available for discussions. Yet it has steadfastly refused to express any sympathy for the death of Kim, whose Stalinist regime is accused of having one of the worst, if not the worst, human rights records in the world.

While showering the late Czech democracy leader Vaclev Havel with effusive eulogies, American officials have refused to even utter the word "condolence" in relation to Kim.

"With regard to the C-word," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Tuesday, "I think we didn't consider it appropriate in this case."

Democrat Nelson to retire from Senate (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Democratic Senator Ben Nelson said on Tuesday that he will retire next year, dealing a significant blow to his party's hopes of keeping control of the Senate after the November 2012 elections.

Nelson, a former Nebraska governor, said he felt it was time for him to leave elective office and seek new ways to serve his state and his country.

"I'm announcing today that I will not seek re-election. Simply put, it's time to move on," Nelson, 70, said in a video statement.

Nelson's decision not to seek re-election makes his seat in heavily Republican Nebraska a strong contender to be a gain for Republicans in November elections next year, boosting their hopes of wresting control of the chamber from Democrats. Republicans already control the House of Representatives.

Nelson was seen as vulnerable. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee had spent more than $1 million to shore up his re-election campaign and it must now scramble to find a replacement candidate.

The Democrats' slender majority in the Senate is under threat next year. Republicans only have to defend 10 seats, while 23 Democratic senators are up for re-election, including other vulnerable incumbents in Ohio, Missouri, Florida and Pennsylvania.

Democrats now hold 51 Senate seats. Republicans control 47, and there are two independents.

The conservative Tea Party Express, which had named Nelson as one of its top targets for defeat in 2012, hailed news of his impending retirement as a victory.

"There is no doubt that he felt our heat of the Tea Party and decided that he was not up for the fight," the organization said in a fundraising letter.

It is unclear who might replace Nelson as the Democratic candidate. Former Senator Bob Kerrey, a popular figure in Nebraska, has been widely talked about as a possible replacement, but he has not said whether he would enter the race.

The Republican field is led by state Attorney General Jon Bruning.

Packers' patchwork line keeps Bears at bay

By CHRIS JENKINS

updated 5:37 p.m. ET Dec. 26, 2011

GREEN BAY, Wis. - So much for the notion that Aaron Rodgers' health would be at risk behind the Green Bay Packers' banged-up offensive line.

With the Packers missing three of their top four tackles because of injuries and only two offensive line starters playing the same positions they were in Week 1, the patchwork Packers held the Chicago Bears' defense at bay in a 35-21 victory Sunday night.

Rodgers wasn't sacked and threw five touchdowns, allowing Green Bay to clinch home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs and knock Chicago out of playoff contention.

"I barely got touched out there," Rodgers said Sunday night. "That's always fun."

Still, Packers coach Mike McCarthy might be tempted to rest Rodgers for at least some of Sunday's regular-season finale against Detroit to keep him out of harm's way.

"At the end of the day, you're going to do what's best for this team and the individuals on your football team," McCarthy said Monday. "We're preparing to win this game."

A significant injury to Rodgers would be catastrophic for the Packers' hopes of repeating as Super Bowl champions, and there was plenty of concern about the line's ability to protect him from Julius Peppers and the rest of the Bears' solid defensive front.

Rodgers had been sacked seven times and taken several other big hits in the Packers' previous two games, a victory over Oakland and a loss at Kansas City.

"When your quarterback's getting hit and sacked as much as Aaron the past couple weeks, that's the last thing you want to have happen as an offensive lineman," lineman T.J. Lang said. "There wasn't a whole lot of talking. Everyone understood the urgency level that we had to have to win those one-on-one battles and keep (Rodgers) clean because he can make a lot of big plays when he's not getting touched."

Lang switched from left guard to right tackle after the Packers lost starter Bryan Bulaga to a sprained left knee and backup Derek Sherrod to a broken right leg against the Chiefs.

Evan Dietrich-Smith stepped in for Lang at left guard. Backup Marshall Newhouse already had been filling in at left tackle for Chad Clifton, out since Oct. 9 with hamstring and back injuries.

That meant center Scott Wells and right guard Josh Sitton were the only two players in the same spots they were in for the Packers' season opener against New Orleans.

It didn't work particularly well against the Chiefs, Rodgers couldn't mount a comeback and the Packers lost their first game of the season. But the reshuffled line then had a week to practice together and prepare for the Bears, and things looked much better Sunday night.

McCarthy helped keep the Bears' pass rush off-balance early by using a no-huddle offense and rolling out Rodgers, and the line did the rest.

"That was a big challenge for the offensive line," McCarthy said. "The offensive line actually is going to receive a game ball when we come back together Wednesday. I think that tells you how we felt about their performance as a whole."

The offense did hit a lull in the first half that allowed the Bears to stay in the game into the third quarter. Then the Packers scored on three straight possessions to put away the game.

"It was big that we had a full week to kind of jell together and practice together as the five we had out there starting," Lang said Sunday. "Definitely big for us today to go out and pitch a shutout in the sack category. It took a little bit more pride in protecting Aaron. Obviously, the last couple games, he was getting hit too much. That was one thing we knew that the Bears had a great pass-rushing defense and we would have to take a little more pride in winning your individual battle and keep him clean."

The Packers did allow a sack of backup quarterback Matt Flynn in the fourth quarter Sunday night, but not until well after the game had been decided.

"They played excellent," Rodgers said. "I think a lot of people were questioning even the starters and the way that they've played. We had T.J. at right tackle and we had Evan at left guard and those guys played great. I've got to give them a lot of credit. They're the MVPs tonight."

Of course, getting good play from backups is nothing new for a Packers team that shook off significant injuries to win the Super Bowl last year.

"For us to not give up any sacks tonight was a huge thing," Sitton said. "It speaks to the guys that we have. Last year, we dealt with the whole injury thing all year, and this week, we had to play a couple guys in different positions upfront and everybody handled it well. It's pretty cool."

McCarthy said Bulaga is "close" to returning, and said he wants Clifton to play this week.

"He knows that, and that's the goal," McCarthy said. "But once again, it is an injury situation, and what he's gone through the last nine, 10 weeks, we'll take it day by day."

And while it's not clear when Clifton or Bulaga will return, one thing is certain: The Packers' backup linemen don't particularly like hearing the term "patchwork" used to describe their play.

"I think we played pretty well, our quote-unquote 'patchwork' line," Newhouse said. "We have guys who have been in the system for a while and trust each other, and we had a good week of preparation, so it worked out well."

Atrocity in California?s Kern County: Deputy Runs Down Pedestrians, Police Arrest Grieving Relatives

William Grigg, Republic Magazine 12/21/2011

According to Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood, ?it may be months before an investigation determines exactly what happened Friday night when a sheriff?s deputy hit and killed two pedestrians in Oildale.? Police who responded to the incident took the deputy to the hospital ? and arrested grieving relatives on the scene.

Daniel Hiler ran out of gas during an evening motorcycle ride in Oildale, California on December 16. While walking his bike to a gas station, the twenty-year-old father of two ran into a family friend named Chrystal Jolley. The pair was crossing a street at a widely-recognized intersection when they were fatally blindsided by a vehicle traveling at a speed well in excess of the posted speed limit. Despite the fact that darkness had descended, the driver hadn?t turned on his headlights. The victims were killed instantly.

Within minutes, police swarmed the scene, and arrests were made ? none of which involved the driver, Deputy John Swearengin of the Kern County Sheriff?s Office. The four people arrested were relatives of the victims, who got into what the Sheriff?s Office described as an ?altercation? with California Highway Patrol officers when they attempted to identify the victims.

And now? the rest of the story. ?..

Pope laments Christmas consumerism, glitter (AP)

VATICAN CITY ? Pope Benedict XVI decried the increasing commercialization of Christmas as he celebrated Christmas Eve Mass on Saturday night, urging the faithful to look beyond the holiday's "superficial glitter" to discover its true meaning.

Benedict presided over the service in a packed St. Peter's Basilica, kicking off an intense two weeks of Christmas-related public appearances that will test the 84-year-old pontiff's stamina amid signs that fatigue is starting to slow him down.

The Christmas Eve Mass was moved up to 10 p.m. from midnight several years ago to spare the pope a late night that is followed by an important Christmas Day speech. In a new concession this year, Benedict processed down the basilica's central aisle on a moving platform to spare him the long walk.

Benedict appeared tired by the end of the Mass and a dry cough interrupted his homily.

In his homily, Benedict lamented that Christmas has become an increasingly commercial celebration that obscures the simplicity of the message of Christ's birth.

"Let us ask the Lord to help us see through the superficial glitter of this season, and to discover behind it the child in the stable in Bethlehem, so as to find true joy and true light," he said.

It was the second time in as many days that Benedict has pointed to the need to rediscover faith to confront the problems facing the world today. In his end-of-year meeting with Vatican officials on Thursday, Benedict said Europe's financial crisis was largely "based on the ethical crisis looming over the Old Continent."

Benedict officially kicked off Christmas a few hours before the evening Mass, lighting a candle in his studio window overlooking St. Peter's Square in a sign of peace, as crowds gathered to witness the unveiling of the Vatican's larger-than-life sized nativity scene.

Security was tight for the evening Mass, as it has been in recent years. There were no repeats of the 2008 and 2009 Christmas Eve security breaches, in which a woman with a history of psychiatric problems and wearing a telltale red sweat shirt jumped the wooden security barrier along the basilica's central aisle and lunged for the pope.

In 2008, the pope's security detail blocked her from getting to Benedict. But in 2009, she managed to grab Benedict's vestments and pulled him to the ground. The pope was unhurt and continued along with the service, but a French cardinal who was nearby fell and broke his hip.

On Sunday, Benedict will deliver his traditional "Urbi et Orbi" speech, Latin for "to the city and the world," from the central loggia of St. Peter's overlooking the piazza. Usually, the speech is a survey of sorts of the hardships and wars confronting humanity. He's also due to deliver Christmas greetings in dozens of languages.

Next weekend, he'll preside over a New Year's Eve vespers service, followed by a New Year's Day Mass. A few days later he'll celebrate Epiphany Mass followed by his traditional baptizing of babies in the Vatican's frescoed Sistine Chapel.

If a video game knows anything, Overeem is headed for an easy win over Lesnar

UFC Undisputed 3 is due out soon and the game makers teased us a bit by releasing a preview of what the Brock Lesnar-Alistair Overeem fight could look like.

Who knew Overeem was in even the game? The massive Dutchman is actually a bonus character you can unlock here on THQ's Facebook page.

In this simulation, Overeem is a beast. He thwarts a takedown and kicks out of another. He wins the clinch game along the cage and delivers a devastating knee. Lesnar didn't have a shot to run from this standing strike. He goes down in a heap. Mike Goldberg goes crazy and Junior dos Santos better prep for "The Reem."

Haimen, China, Protests: Tear Gas Fired At Protesters

BEIJING -- Riot police in a southern Chinese coastal town fired tear gas Friday at protesters, including elderly men and women, on the fourth day of unrest over a planned power plant expansion, according to protesters' accounts and TV footage.

Police and protesters in the town of Haimen squared off near a highway entrance that has become the focal point for protests this week, with residents demanding that authorities release an unknown number of demonstrators.

The town's elders knelt on the road facing a barricade set up by riot police with helmets and shields several hundred yards (meters) away while others lit large incense sticks and planted them into a plastic foam makeshift altar, a protester said by phone.

"They were begging the police to release those people that they've detained and praying that the riot police can see things more clearly," the 20-year-old saleswoman surnamed Yao told The Associated Press by phone.

Haimen's protesters are demanding a halt to the planned expansion of a coal-fired power plant which they say has contributed to what they say is a rise in cancer cases and heavy pollution in the seas, a serious problem for a town where many make their living from fishing.

The protests started Tuesday when thousands of people besieged a Haimen government office and blocked a highway. When riot police used tear gas in an attempt to disperse them, demonstrators hurled rocks, water bottles and bricks in return. Clashes broke out, injuring an unknown number of protesters and police, residents say.

In response to the protests, the local government said Tuesday that it would temporarily suspend the power plant project, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

But protesters say they have not heard directly from authorities on the matter and say several protesters in their teens or early 20s had been detained.

Many of the protesters waved red plastic bags meant to signify red scarves worn by children as part of their school uniforms, photos from the scene showed.

They held up banners saying "Release the people," "Defend our home" and "Oppose construction of power plant."

It was not immediately clear how many people have been taken into police custody, but Xinhua said Thursday that five people had been detained by Wednesday for vandalism during the protests.

Earlier in the day, police fired tear gas at the protesters, said another protester, a man surnamed Lin.

"When they saw that more and more people had come to protest, they fired the tear gas to try to chase us away. At the same time, a big gust of wind blew toward us, so we all had to run," Lin said. "My tears ran continuously. Our eyes are all red."

This is the third time police have used tear gas to disperse protesters in Haimen this week.

"We have no weapons at all. All we are doing is standing here and protesting," Lin added.

Hong Kong's Cable TV showed footage of tear gas clouds being blown toward protesters, scattering the crowd of hundreds of people. Riot police with helmets and shields had formed a blockade at the entrance to the highway.

After three decades of laxly regulated industrialization, China is seeing a surge in protests over such environmental worries.

In September, hundreds of villagers in an eastern Chinese city near Shanghai demonstrated against pollution they blamed on a solar panel factory. In August, 12,000 residents in the northeastern port city of Dalian protested against a chemical plant after waves from a tropical storm broke a dike guarding the plant and raised fears that flood waters could release toxic chemicals.

7 states win federal education competition (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Seven states won a share of $200 million in federal "Race to the Top" money to improve K-12 education programs, the Education Department announced Thursday.

The winners are Arizona, $25.1 million; Colorado, $17.9 million; Illinois, $42.8 million; Kentucky, $17 million; Louisiana, $17.5 million; Pennsylvania, $41.3 million; and New Jersey, $37.9 million.

The Obama administration has awarded billions of dollars in such competitions to encourage changes in education that it favors. The seven states competing in this round were all runners-up last year, and the Education Department has said it wants to encourage them to finish and carry out many of the changes proposed in their earlier applications.

Competing states committed to make changes such as improving principal and teacher evaluation systems and turning around under-performing schools. They also were asked to show specifically how they would improve science, technology, engineering and math instruction.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan said the money was driving dramatic improvements.

"We've had broken teacher-evaluation systems in many places, unfortunately for five, or six or seven decades," Duncan said. "You've seen more effort there and more movement in a short amount of time than in a long time prior to that, and many states are using Race to the Top resources to do that."

Two other states, South Carolina and California, were also eligible. South Carolina opted not to compete, while California submitted an incomplete application, the Education Department said.

Last week, nine states were announced as winners of a share of $500 million in grants under a similar competition focused on improving early learning programs.

Duncan also said federal officials are monitoring states to ensure that they follow through on their plans to improve schools with Race to the Top money. For example, he said he has warned Hawaii that it's in danger of losing funding.

"We're going to look for some pretty significant improvements early in the new year," Duncan said. "There's not a hard-and-fast date. If we see things turning around, that would be fantastic. If we don't see things turning around, then we've got some tough decisions to make."
