Investing titan Marc Andreessen says there's no bubble because ...

The cloud computing revolution has made the titanic valuations of major Web 2.0 companies like Facebook and Twitter completely justified, storied venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz co-founder Marc Andreessen (pictured right) said today.

Some major companies in the Web 2.0 era have become incredibly popular and have ballooning valuations. Facebook, for example, is valued at more than $80 billion. Social gaming company Zynga recently filed for an initial public offering in order to raise up to $1 billion and is reportedly valued somewhere around $10 billion. Those colossal valuations have made some investors and entrepreneurs concerned that the companies are overvalued and are contributing to a tech bubble similar to the one that led to a recession in the early 2000s.

But a decade ago, during the last emergence of the last technology investing bubble, Facebook probably would never have made it off the ground because of the massive infrastructure costs and requirements. Thanks to cheaper online storage and the cloud computing revolution, it?s become trivial to start a company that at one point would have to pay millions of dollars to Oracle and others for servers and hardware.?That massive shift in development and computing has led to the emergence of Web 2.0 companies like Facebook, Twitter and others that have revolutionized the way people use the Internet, Andreessen explained onstage at the Box.net Boxworks conference in San Francisco, Calif..

?It costs so much less to run a company like Salesforce.com today than it would 10 or 15 years ago, so you can get these amazing services actually delivered to people,? Andreessen said. ?The cost structure today is so much lower, 10 years ago Facebook would have been impossible to have as a company, the infrastructure costs would have crushed it.?

Andreessen is considered one of the most prominent investors in the valley after he started Netscape during the last dot-com boom. His firm, Andreessen Horowitz, has invested in companies like cloud storage provider Box.net, Groupon, Foursquare, Twitter and Zynga. Most of the companies that his firm has invested in use those new cloud-based computing applications like Amazon?s AWS service and Google Docs, he said.

Companies like Amazon and Google, which run powerful servers that can handle computing-heavy applications remotely, weren?t around a decade ago. Back then, each new startup had to ?sign four checks to Oracle, Sun and two others? before they got off the ground to handle their infrastructure costs, Andreessen said. That meant much larger early capital costs, which required larger ? and more risky ? early-stage investments, Andreessen said.

?People who lived through the 1990s, investors and entrepreneurs are so psychologically starved of the bitter disappointment that it?s hard to look at this landscape and see the things that are working and not get upset,? Andreessen said. ?Stuff is actually just working, it seems like it?s real.?

Morgan Stanley wins dismissal of Libertas CDO suit (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Morgan Stanley (MS.N) won dismissal of a government pension fund lawsuit accusing it of defrauding investors in $1.2 billion of risky mortgage debt that it expected to fail.

U.S. District Judge Barbara Jones in Manhattan said the Virgin Islands fund did not allege sufficient facts to conclude that Morgan Stanley "made an actionable misrepresentation or material omission" in selling "triple-A" rated notes tied to a 2007 collateralized debt obligation known as Libertas.

In its December 2009 complaint, the fund accused Morgan Stanley of collaborating with Moody's Investors Service and Standard & Poor's on credit ratings for the notes, which were backed by subprime mortgages. It also said the bank "shorted" the notes in a successful bet that they would lose value.

Jason Davis, a lawyer for the Virgin Islands fund, did not immediately return a call seeking comment. Morgan Stanley also did not immediately return a call.

Several banks have faced allegations that they helped package risky debt for investors, only to then bet against it or allow a client to do so.

In July 2010, Goldman Sachs Group Inc (GS.N) agreed to pay $550 million to settle such charges by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission over the Abacus 2007-AC1 CDO, an accord that won approval from Jones.

And in June 2011, JPMorgan Chase & Co (JPM.N) reached a $153.6 million settlement with the SEC over the Squared CDO 2007-1.

TITANIC

According to the Virgin Islands fund complaint, the Libertas CDO had been backed by assets from subprime lenders New Century Financial Corp, which went bankrupt, and Option One Mortgage Corp, then owned by H&R Block Inc (HRB.N).

The fund also said Morgan Stanley should have given investors more than a generic warning in the CDO's offering materials that rising delinquencies "may" cause losses.

It likened this to the Titanic's captain telling passengers that his ship may sink because others had, while concealing that the ship had struck an iceberg and was taking on water.

But Jones said the fund made only a "conclusory allegation" that Morgan Stanley collaborated with the rating agencies to generate false ratings. She also said the offering materials were prepared by the issuers and were not a "statement" by Morgan Stanley promoting false ratings.

Moody's is a unit of Moody's Corp (MCO.N) and S&P is a unit of McGraw-Hill Cos (MHP.N). Neither was a defendant.

The case is Employees' Retirement System of the Government of the Virgin Islands v. Morgan Stanley et al, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, No. 09-10532.

Lewiston Home Building ? Blog Archive ? Model and Texture in ...

model and texture in children's roomsYou must use different models and textures in the fabric and decoration around the room. Diversity will help stimulate the interest of the people who inhabit that room. Every time you play, for example, an infant a tissue with a different texture will learn something new about their world.

In the case of babies or infants, the bars of the crib should have soft tissue, but can incorporate different textures. Until your child reaches 12 months, do not allow you to have a blanket while sleeping, even a small one. If you are holding your child, a soft blanket can be comforting, but many children die each year from SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome in infants) and most are covered by a blanket.

Business Networking Tips for Internet Marketers | LibPress.com

How Internet Marketers Can Get Better at Business Networking

If you want to have greater influence, lots of great partnerships and find as many new clients as possible, business networking is the name of the game. Obviously, though, even as a website owner or Internet marketer, you need to expand your business networking activities beyond the Internet. Your primary focus should be on building a good and strong business network for yourself in every way possible whether you do things online or offline. Your aim should be to never let go of any opportunity to effectively network to enhance your business and get the most out of it. Keep reading to learn a few things that you can do to build an even better business network for yourself.

Diversify Your Efforts: The way in which you go about meeting potential new network members is really important. You can?t just stick to a few tried and tested ways, because the more you diversify your efforts, the better it is. It?s important not to put all of your business networking ideas in one ?basket? and just hope that it gets you through because the best way to continuously find new contacts is to take consistent action. Once you know which methods are going to do the best job of helping you build your network, you can stop doing the other methods that won?t get you the results you want.

Push the Envelope: Success with business networking lies in how you go about the whole process in comparison to the others. You need to put in more of an effort if you want to find better contacts and earn more points than your competitors. Push against the envelope and you will see that you?re easily doing more than everybody else is doing. It is when times get slow (and there will be slow times) that you really need to put your best foot forward because it takes a blend of perseverance and dedication to keep yourself from quitting halfway.

Use Effective Time Management: When you run your own Internet based business, you are the one who oversees everything and building a strong contact list and growing your own business network are just a couple of the things you need to work on. However, since your business depends on your ability to network effectively you need to properly manage your time so that you dedicate a fair amount of it to this particular area. Effective time management will help you in more than one way when it comes to business networking, always keep that in mind.

You need to put lots of prep into your business networking activities because if you just go on and on about it aimlessly, there?s a chance that you are going to wind up making only mediocre contacts who won?t really help you a lot. Create an action plan that you can follow with your efforts so that you can rest assured that you are both growing your business network and enhancing your business all at the same time. You might have to wait a little bit before you see some real results but if you make all of the best contacts there isn?t anything like it.

Change Ip To Keep Your Children Safe On The Web ? Best Gadget ...

IP short for Internet protocol with its numerical address is what acts like a key and an identity tag for a computer connected to the web. This short article throws light on why it can be so vital that you change IP to permit children to safely use the net.

Internet has changed the way in which we live, work and socialize. Internet and instant communication media is still rapidly redefining how we interact, monitor and guide our kids who generally tend to be more computer and internet savvy than their parents. To become successful as adults our children have to embrace and learn all these information age skills when there will be even more comprehensive information available virtually at the click of a mouse from the global information network.

Internet has proved to be the most effective tools to teach the children. The creative and interactive ways for teaching is immensely helped by the internet and new media technologies. There is lot of good stuff on the web, but there is also a lot of really awful stuff too. The net could be a risky place for children. Children and teenagers face numerous threats and allurements from sexual predators and from internet scam artists. It is extremely easy to fool people on the web. Stalkers and pedophiles have now taken to the cyber space. These Cyber Stalkers can be found in many chat rooms and on many social networking sites.

The social networking sites like My Space and Face Book that got their sustenance from teenagers and young adults has totally changed how kids relate, interact and socialize. It is a sensation that still baffles parents. Face Book, cell phones, TV and Internet-that is how pre-teens and teens congregate, socialize and hang out. Because these sites are so popular with kids and teens and also have become new rendezvous for them has brought many unsavory characters including scammers, pedophiles and even terrorists rushing to these sites.

How has a parent to deal with all this breath taking speed with which our lives are changing? Developing new parenting skills to guide and nurture the kids in a healthy way is always to say the least, challenging. Good parenting has more to accomplish with parental influence rather than parental control. This implies parents must be up to speed with changing times and technology.

It?s heartening to know that things really aren?t as hopeless as they might sometimes appear to. Technology is empowering the parents at the same time to understand and use these user friendly tools and media to meet these changes and actually enrich their experiences.

Parents eventually find that old fashioned way of spending time with kids, talking with them and establishing limits and expectations works miracles. Making computer the center of action for the whole friends and family to be around rather than have it in basement or kid?s room will help hugely. Getting engaged in offline household recreation is in spite of everything still the most potent antidote to letting kids lose their ways. So does, utilizing filters along with parental control software on the computers. Staying engaged in the community and public library systems to bring in filters on computers and just staying involved with their children and be conscious of their environment makes a quality difference in how the teenagers on their own are going to be able develop healthy and balanced perception of appropriate use of the the net.

However, it should be acknowledged that just being connected to the web can place you at the risk of cyber stalkers, hackers and criminals. For them to identify your IP address is the initial step for their unsavory activities. IP address is like giving the address along with keys to your house to likely burglars.

Additionally, in spite of our extraordinary work in educating our youngsters how to protect their identifying information on the web it is more or less likely that young children will unintentionally allow some of this important info slip by. Even for grownups it is essentially impossible to fully shield ourselves from hacking, intrusion, information leaks and identity theft.

On the other hand, technology has again come to the rescue to meet this challenge. Since IP address is what pinpoints your computer in cyberspace you might Change IP to deceive these undesirables. The technology of using IP Changer Software and use of a number of Proxy Servers enables one to surf the web anonymously. So if the kid says that their school mascot is a

Doomed satellite landed in Pacific, NASA says (Reuters)

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) ? Debris from a defunct six-ton NASA science satellite that crashed to Earth on Saturday fell harmlessly in a remote area of the South Pacific Ocean, NASA said on Tuesday.

Experts estimated that as much as 1,100 pounds (495 kg) of debris survived the bus-sized satellite's fiery plunge through the atmosphere, which started at midnight EDT on Saturday (0400 GMT on Sunday).

The Joint Space Operations Center at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California determined that the U.S. space agency's Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) entered the atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean at 14.1 degrees south latitude and 170.2 west longitude, NASA said in a statement.

That location is in Pacific in the rough vicinity of Samoa. The debris was then scattered between 300 miles and 800 miles from the re-entry point, NASA said.

"This location is over a broad, remote ocean area in the Southern Hemisphere, far from any major land mass," NASA said, adding that the agency "is not aware of any possible debris sightings from this geographic area."

Measuring 35 feet long and 15 feet in diameter (10.6 km long and 4.6 km in diameter), UARS was among the largest spacecraft to plummet uncontrollably through the atmosphere.

NASA now plans for the controlled re-entry of large spacecraft, but it did not when UARS was designed.

The 13,000-pound (5,897 kg) satellite was placed into orbit by a space shuttle crew in 1991 to study ozone and other chemicals in Earth's atmosphere. It completed its mission in 2005 and had been slowly losing altitude ever since, pulled by the planet's gravity.

UARS was one of about 20,000 pieces of space debris in orbit around Earth. Something the size of UARS falls back into the atmosphere about once a year.

Astronauts Set to Become Aquanauts for Undersea 'Asteroid' Mission (SPACE.com)

A team of astronauts, usually known for traveling upwards, are now preparing to head down into the deep.

NASA has announced its newest undersea mission, a 13-day voyage 60 feet (18 meters) into the Atlantic Ocean to simulate a trip to an asteroid. The trip will include six astronauts, as well as noted Mars planetary scientist Steve Squyres and two professional "aquanauts."

NASA astronaut Shannon Walker, who previously lived and worked on the International Space Station for five months in 2010, will lead the crew during their foray to the Aquarius Underwater Laboratory 3 1/2 miles off the shore of Key Largo, Fla.?The expedition is set to start on Oct. 17.

The voyage is the 15th in NASA's NEEMO (NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations) series of missions, which take advantage of the applicability of astronaut training to deep-sea travels. In this case, the neutral-buoyancy environment underwater is the closest approximation of the near-weightless conditions on an asteroid that can be had on Earth. [Gallery: Visions of NASA Asteroid Mission]

The NEEMO 15 mission is the first to simulate an asteroid visit. Previous underwater missions have rehearsed moonwalking, assembling space station modules, and even visits to Mars.

The new NEEMO crew will test various methods of anchoring to an asteroid's surface, moving around and collecting data.? The astronauts and aquanauts will practice moving along a surface without gravity, and try out strategies for deploying instruments.

Walker, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Takuya Onishi and Canadian Space Agency astronaut David Saint-Jacques will live aboard the Aquarius lab, while NASA astronauts Stan Love, Richard Arnold and Mike Gernhardt will pilot the DeepWorker submersible. This small submarine will serve as a stand-in for NASA's Space Exploration Vehicle, a rover the agency is developing to explore the surface of an asteroid.?[Video: Rock & Roll Asteroids]

Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen and Jeanette Epps of NASA will talk to the NEEMO crew from Mission Control as capsule communicators (capcoms). James Talacek and Nate Bender of the University of North Carolina, Wilmington, are professional aquanauts, or divers who specialize in working underwater.

"NEEMO 15 will require complex choreography between the submarines and aquanauts living and working in their undersea home," NEEMO project manager Bill Todd said in a statement. "Researching the challenges of exploring an asteroid surface in the undersea realm will be exciting for fans of exploration pioneers Cousteau and Armstrong alike."?

To prepare for the mission, divers worked during the spring and summer to set up a simulated asteroid landscape on the sea floor. A 16-by-12-foot fiberglass wall will allow the explorers to practice drilling to anchor to an asteroid's surface, and using metal plates for magnetic anchoring.

The research on NEEMO 15 will be a boon for NASA's goal of sending humans to an asteroid by 2025, a mission President Barack Obama charged the agency with last year. [Photos: Asteroids in Deep Space]

The mission is a collaboration between NASA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which owns Aquarius, and the University of North Carolina, Wilmington, which operates the ocean lab.

How to Write and Start Selling Ebooks Online | WEB-DESIGN,WEB ...

The business of selling eBooks online can be very profitable. Ebooks are electronic books that do not require printing ? is simply a non-material product that doesn?t have any costs to produce an additional copy. Ebook can easily contain any information you want to share and think would be beneficial for your customers, and it does not require you to write it. You can easily use the information available online for free ? collect it and reuse it in your ebook. This way you can start your own ebook business ? sell them online and make a fortune. The business of delivering information in the form of newsletters or eBooks are extremely profitable, but for a startup venture it is very important to be guided to the right direction and get going.

You can follow the following steps to create and excel a business of selling eBooks online:

1. Firstly you need to come with an idea of what kind of eBook you want to sell. This can be the brainstorming session. The best would be to write an ebook that suits you as a person ? on a topic that is really interesting to you. Do you know a lot about paragliding? Great. Share your knowledge in an ebook. Do you know how to make money online? Share your tips ? how you started online, how you started selling and making money. Find a topic that looks interesting for people. Usually it is on how to make more money, how to save money, how to save time and reduce work efforts. Self-help books also sell greatly. If you don?t have enough time to do it yourself, you can always hire a person online on a freelance website to do some work for you ? collect certain kind of information, compile it and make it useful for your ebook.

3. After writing or preparing the digital content, it must be compiled in the form of a book. Most people use the Word or any other similar office type products to write their information. However, writing is not everything ? you need to have some pictures, graphics on your ebook ? especially the cover. A properly designed website and great sales page will convert your visitors into buyers and it will result you in many sales.

5. Once you have that ready, just get a domain name under a web hosting company. And you will have a fully working website.

6. Now you have a working website and a great ebook ? how to accept payments? You will have to find a payment processor that will accept your product and allow you to process payments online ? accept credit card and PayPal payments online. There are companies that allow you to sell your digital products online and accept credit card payments from your customers. Proper payment methods will let your buyers pay for your ebook easily and definitely attract the buyers for easy and convenient shopping.

7. Then once you have everything ready and set up all you will have to do is just to go and start promoting your website. There are many ways to promote your ebooks website online ? use available affiliate networks where you will pay affiliates to promote your ebook and this way you will earn money. Write articles, build links to your website. Submit your website to relevant website directories. This will attract interested visitors and you will start selling your ebook.

On successful completion of all the above steps, you can rest assured that your business would flourish and you would be making money. Thus, if you have some information which can be sold online, you can simply transform them into digital information and can have a profitable business. It?s not an easy task to write an ebook, however there is no free money ? even online and there is no magic bullet. You have to work hard with a right plan and only then you will succeed. However, once you succeed and start making your first sales you will be happy that you started this online business.

Intel, Samsung get behind new Linux phone software (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Two Linux software groups have joined forces, they said on Wednesday, to develop a new operating system for cellphones and other devices in collaboration with Intel and Samsung Electronics.

However, analysts said the new Tizen platform is likely to struggle to attract wider developer and manufacturer support to compete with the dozen or so other mobile operating systems in a market dominated by Apple and Google's Linux-based Android.

Even industry majors Nokia and Hewlett-Packard have ditched their mobile platforms this year.

"The best hope for them is that big operators get worried by Android's increasing smartphone dominance and decide to consciously switch their allegiances to rival platforms to restrict Google's huge influence over the mobile market," said analyst Neil Mawston from Strategy Analytics.

LiMo Foundation and the Linux Foundation said the new Tizen platform is an open-source, standards-based software platform that supports multiple devices including smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, netbooks and in-vehicle 'infotainment' systems.

The initial release is planned for the first quarter of 2012, enabling the first devices using Tizen to come to market in mid-2012, the two groups said.

The world's largest semiconductor firm Intel, which also has its own MeeGo Linux system, and Samsung Electronics, the second biggest maker of cell phones and one of the key contributors to LiMo, will head the technical steering committee developing Tizen.

"Tizen aims to unify a number of marginalized Linux based platforms," said Geoff Blaber, an analyst at London-based telecoms industry consultancy CCS Insight.

"There is a willingness to create an independent alternative to Android but history tells us that willingness doesn't necessarily equate to success," he added.

Samsung is the leading user of the Android platform, but some other makers of Android-operated phones have begun to look at alternatives since Google agreed to buy Motorola Mobility last month for $12.5 billion.

"Samsung might be further tempted to try a new system as Google's acquisition of Motorola Mobility raised uncertainty over the future of Android," said Song Jong-ho, an analyst at Daewoo Securities.

A spokesman for Samsung said: "We've been a core Linux partner ... and this is in line with our strategy of supporting many platforms."

Earlier this month Intel and Google launched a development partnership to adapt Android for Intel's Atom processor chips, with a view to having the first Android phones featuring Intel chips in the first half of next year.

Linux is the most popular type of free, or open-source, computer operating system which allows the public to use, revise and share. Linux suppliers earn money selling improvements and technical services.

Broccoli, Cabbage, Other Veggies May Protect Against Colon Cancer (HealthDay)

MONDAY, Sept. 26 (HealthDay News) -- Eating fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of some colorectal cancers, according to a new study.

Austrailian researchers examined the diets of 918 colorectal cancer patients and 1,021 people with no history of the disease and found that consumption of certain vegetables and fruits were associated with a decreased risk of cancer in the proximal and distal colon -- that is, the upper and lower portions of the colon.

Consumption of brassica vegetables (also known as cole crops) such as broccoli, kale, cauliflower, turnips and cabbage, for example, appeared to reduce the risk of cancer in the upper colon, while both total fruit and vegetable intake (and total vegetable intake alone) reduced the risk of cancer in the lower colon.

They also found that eating more apples and dark, yellow vegetables was linked with a significantly reduced risk of lower colon cancer.

Yet higher levels of fruit juice consumption were associated with an increased risk for rectal cancer.

The study appears in the October issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association.

"Fruits and vegetables have been examined extensively in nutritional research in relation to CRC (colorectal cancer), however, their protective effect has been subject to debate, possibly because of different effects on different subsites of the large bowel," lead investigator Professor Lin Fritschi, head of the Epidemiology Group at the Western Australian Institute for Medical Research, said in a journal news release.

"It may be that some of the confusion about the relationship between diet and cancer risk is due to the fact that previous studies did not take site of the [colorectal cancer] into account. The replication of these findings in large prospective studies may help determine whether a higher intake of vegetables is a means for reducing the risk" of cancer in the lower colon, Fritschi concluded.

APNewsBreak: Exxon Mobil to restart Mont. pipeline (AP)

BILLINGS, Mont. ? A failed Exxon Mobil pipeline that spilled an estimated 42,000 gallons of oil into the Yellowstone River was expected to restart operations on Saturday after federal officials approved repairs meant to prevent another accident.

A quarter-mile segment of the 12-inch pipeline was replaced by drilling a new passage an estimated 60 to 70 feet beneath the riverbed. That change makes it far less likely that the Silvertip pipeline will fail a second time, Montana Department of Environmental Quality Director Richard Opper said.

"There were a lot of eyes on this from our federal partners," Opper said of repairs to the line. "It was done right. It's a lot safer pipeline now, at least crossing the river."

The 20-year-old line broke near Laurel on July 1 after flooding scoured the river bottom and exposed the pipe, which had been buried just five feet deep in some areas. Released oil fouled dozens of miles of riverbank, contaminated crops and pastureland and was blamed for killing birds, reptiles and other wildlife.

Although relatively small compared to other spills, the Yellowstone accident drew widespread attention because it followed a recent string of pipeline failures across the country and occurred along a waterway renowned for its fishing and scenery.

An investigation is pending into whether Exxon Mobil violated safety rules prior to the accident. Officials in Laurel had notified both the company and federal regulators that they were worried about a potential failure of the line due to erosion.

Federal pipeline safety officials said they had conducted an extensive review of the repairs made by Exxon Mobil to ensure the line could be operated in a safe and environmentally sound manner.

The flow of oil will resume once integrity checks have been completed on the line, company spokeswoman Rachael Moore said. She declined to say when that would be, but Opper said he was told Saturday.

The federal Pipeline and Hazardous Materials and Safety Administration said in a Friday statement that its inspectors would be on hand for the restart.

Federal regulators also required that two more of the pipeline's river crossings be replaced, at Rock Creek and the Clarks Fork of the Yellowstone. That came after safety officials required Exxon Mobil to re-evaluate the crossings in the wake of the Yellowstone spill.

The work on the two crossings is to be completed by next March, Moore said.

"Prior to completion of the new crossings, (Exxon Mobil) will monitor daily stream flow conditions and institute shut down and isolation procedures if flow conditions exceed agreed upon thresholds," Moore said in an emailed statement.

The cleanup of remaining oil along the Yellowstone continues. At its peak more than 1,000 Exxon Mobil contractors were involved in removing contaminated vegetation and mopping up pockets of crude.

Only about 10 barrels of crude oil, or 420 gallons, were recovered, according to federal officials. Exxon Mobil and the DEQ are negotiating terms of the remaining work.

Silvertip is the main crude source for Exxon Mobil's 60,000-barrel a day refinery in Billings. The company had to scale back refinery operations and scramble to find other sources of oil while the line was down.

Local officials had worried jobs could be lost from the refinery if the pipeline repairs took too long. Yellowstone County Commissioner Bill Kennedy on Friday welcomed news that the line would soon start up again.

He said the refinery provides work for 380 Exxon Mobil employees and contractors.

"What this means is it's keeping people working and it means Exxon can contract out work. It's keeping people in jobs and dollars flowing in the community," Kennedy said.

The company in July estimated its response to the spill could cost more than $42 million. That was only a preliminary figure, and final costs could be higher after the cleanup proved more difficult than first expected.

The cause of the pipeline's failure remains under investigation.

If You Build It, They Will Come | AutoRoll - News and Society

?

Just like any business, there is basically one central event that will mean the difference between success or failure in starting your own customers. ?It isn?t a difficult issue to figure out either. ?You have to find customers. ?And for you, customers are parents who need a quality day care that they feel they can trust to put their children in as they go off to work. ?The title we chose for this article is a famous quote from field of dreams where the voice tells Kevin Costner to build a baseball field for ghosts to play on with the encouragement, ?If you build it, they will come.? ?While that is an inspirational line, you need more than that before you take the plunge of building a day care center.Starting a business is costly. ?Before you collect a dime of income from parents, you have to set up your day care center, pay licensing fees, hire workers, buy supplies and invest in many other ways so that when the doors of your day care open, it is a happy, professional and welcoming place that children will want to be in and that parents will want to use for their day care.

?

Many times to secure the funds to build a day care, you get a small business loan. ?And any bank or financial institution that is going to fund you is going to require that you can demonstrate that you can find customers and that you have a real and identified market to serve when you open your business. ?So not only do you have to know that ?they will come?, you have to know who your customers are and that they are eager to use what ?you have to offer. The single most sure fire way to be able to know for a fact that you are building a day care business that is going to be a success is to already have ?your core customer base identified. ?So doing that market research must be in the top five of activities you do not after you have opened but before you even decide to go for it and build your day care. ?Market research is a fancy business term for identifying your customers and validating that they are there and need your services. ?One way to verify this is to produce a study that shows that there are a high concentration of homes with two working parents in the geographical area where you will place your day care and that there is a low concentration of day cares serving the needs of those parents. ?That is solid market research.

?

Another way to approach documenting the market for your new day care is through a population study of existing day cares. ?Most day cares have a limit to the amount of children they can legally accommodate. ?If you already know where geographically you are going to open your day care, you can do a thorough study of the day cares in your area and then interview them to see how full they are. ?An even more telling statistic would be how many of those day cares are at capacity and are turning away children because they cannot accept any more. ?If that is a common occurrence in local day cares, then there is a market need for one more facility and that one can be yours. But probably the most sure fire way to identify your customer base it through networking with other parents about the need for a new kind of day care. ?If you have your children in a day care, you can easily find ways to socialize with the other parents. There may be a lot of dissatisfaction with a day care because of the way it is run, because of the attitude of the workers, because of cleanliness or safety issues or because of overcrowding. ?By networking, you can develop a list of parents who will commit to bring their children to your day care when it opens. ?And that list is the most convincing market research there is it because those commitments who for certain that if you build your new day care, they will come.

Investing in High Dividend Yield Stocks - Articles Blog

High yield stocks is a kind of stock which has a dividend-price ratio that is much higher than a benchmark average?s yield, like the 10-Year note of the United States Department of Treasury (US Treasury). High yield stocks? classification is in relation to any market analyst?s criteria. A few market analysts may think that only a 2 percent dividend yield is high, while some market analysts may think that 2 percent is relatively low. In considering the highness or lowness of a dividend yield, there are no criteria. However, numerous market analysts employ indicators like the previously talked about comparison between the 10-Year note of the United States Department of Treasury and dividend yield of a stock.

A high yield dividend indicates that an individual will acquire a higher payment on dividend with respect to the price per share of a stock. Investing in high dividend yield stocks is a profitable investment plan since it will increase any income an individual receives from a raise in stock price. There are a lot of ways to purchase and choose high dividend yield stocks.

First, an individual must search for financial websites that offer information on stocks and should find stocks wherein an individual can possibly invest that have a minimum of dividend yield of at least 5 percent.

Then, find the yearly dividend payment of each company, which is the remaining amount of shares as well as the sum of a company?s free cash flow produced within a year in every financial ratio or financial metrics section of the websites that offer stock details.

The individual must divide every free cash flow of the stock by the remaining amount of shares in order to compute per share of free cash flow. The yearly dividend payment must be divided by the free cash flow in order to compute the payout ratio of the free cash flow.

An individual must spend in stocks that produce beneficial free cash flow as well as have a low payout ratio of free cash flow. Some market analysts suggest investing that has a payout ratio of less than 80%. Companies that have beneficial free cash flow tend to produce enough amount of money in order to keep on paying higher dividends.

Finally, an individual must reinvest a dividend of the stock into more stock shares. A DRIP, or dividend reinvestment plan, must be exercised if a company has one. A dividend reinvestment plan allows an individual to reinvest dividends of a stock directly to the company. Reinvesting a dividend yield stock into more shares adds to the amount of shares an individual owns.

High dividend yields signify a stock?s undervaluation since the dividend of a stock is relatively high compared with a stock price. A high dividend yield is specifically chosen by value and income investors. A high yield stock is likely to do better than no yield stocks and low yield stocks throughout market trends since a lot of investors think that it is less risky to pay dividend stocks.

Will I Have to Release Home Equity If I Do a Debt Management Plan ...

If you are a homeowner and considering a debt management plan to solve your debt problem, we investigate whether you will have to release home equity as part of the agreement.

A debt management plan (DMP) is an informal, none legally binding agreement with your creditors to reduce the amount of your monthly repayments to an affordable amount. Because it is informal, one of the advantages of a DMP is that you will not be forced to release any equity from your home to help repay your debt.

Many homeowners who have equity in their property choose the DMP option for this reason. They want to protect the equity in their property rather than having to release it to pay unsecured debt.

Use equity to pay debt early

Despite that advantage the debt management plan gives in terms of not forcing you to release you home equity, you must make sure you weigh this up against the major disadvantage.

This is that if you chose to use a DMP, you still have to pay 100% of your debt back. The people you owe money to will not automatically agree to write off any of your outstanding balances for you.

For this reason, using a debt management plan will often mean that you are repaying your debt for a very long time.

After being in a debt management plan for a year or two you might find that repaying your debt is going to take longer than you first thought and you may start to consider equity release as a sensible option.

Lump sum settlements

If you do start to consider using equity from your property to pay your debt management plan debt faster, you need to go about this in the right way. It is likely that you will not need to release an amount equal to your outstanding debt.

This is because once you have been in a DMP for a while most of your creditors will be prepared to let you settle your debt for less than the amount outstanding if you are able to make a lump sum payment.

The amount of lump sum you have to make available will vary depending on your personal circumstances. However, it is possible that a lump sum offer of as little as 50% of your outstanding debt could be enough to settle in full.

Remortgage v secured loan

If you are considering using home equity to settle your DMP early, you need to consider the best way of doing this.

An important thing to bear in mind is that your credit rating will have been made much worse by your debt management plan.

For this reason it may not be sensible to change your whole mortgage to release a sum of equity as this would result in the whole mortgage loan being subject to a far higher mortgage interest rate.

A better option would be to consider whether you could take a secured loan against your property. This way only this secured loan would need to be taken at an adverse interest rate. Your original mortgage would remain unaffected.

The decision on equity release stays yours

If you carry out a debt management plan to resolve your debt problem, you will not be forced to touch any equity you may have in your property. It is your decision to be made if you feel it will be a better option for you than continuing to make your DMP payments.

This is a clear advantage of the DMP solution for homeowners.

Depending on how long it is going to take to repay your debt using a DMP, you may decide to release money from your property at a later date to settle your debt if you wish.

Over the longer term many people do decide on this course of action so that they can pay their debt faster rather than keep their debt management plan running for many years.

Groupon COO leaves to go back to Google (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? Groupon Inc. says its chief operating officer, Margo Georgiadis, has gone back to Google, where she worked before joining the online deals site earlier this year.

Groupon CEO Andrew Mason announced the change on Groupon's blog Friday, saying Georgiadis will become president of Google's Americas region. Now, Groupon's sales, channels, international and marketing teams will report to him.

Groupon also amended its initial public offering registration statement Friday. It has reportedly been considering delaying its plans to go public. It added updated financial information Mason disclosed to employees in a memo last month that was leaked to the press.

The SEC imposes a "quiet period" on companies before an IPO, limiting what they can say publicly.

Friday's filing is an indication that Groupon plans to continue with its IPO.

NFL 2011: What if HGH could cure Peyton Manning?

What If HGH Could Cure Peyton Manning?

Posted Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2011, at 2:54 PM ET

This NFL roundtable is a seasonlong partnership between Slate and Deadspin. Check back here each week as a rotating cast of football watchers discusses the weekend's key plays, coaching decisions, and traumatic brain injuries. And

Peyton Manning. Click image to expand.Which individual is most responsible for his team's success, you ask? Easy. Peyton Manning. Who else could it be? No one knows what Detroit actually has in your boy Stafford (who is essentially a rookie in Bob Griese's body). Meanwhile, Manning's injury turned a playoff team into a gang even the Chiefs can point at and laugh. More interestingly, it revealed something surprising about the Colts. For a long time, Manning's presence gave the Colts the luxury of drafting like the Buffalo Bills without anyone noticing?Football Outsiders counted only two Pro Bowlers in Indy's last five drafts, which is a particularly lousy record for a team built on a draft-and-develop model. Through the prism of their present hopelessness, the Colts since 2008 look less like Bill Polian's whiz-bang organizational marvel of the preceding five years and more like a series of 10-and-6-ish teams on the bad end of the aging curve, with only Manning keeping them from the bottom half of the AFC. They'd become a Potemkin team.

Which brings me in a roundabout way to my favorite hobbyhorse. The other day, Jason Whitlock used Manning's injury to make a smart point about what we're still sloppily calling performance-enhancing drugs:

I'm just talking hypothetically. I don't have any reason to believe HGH or any other steroid would help Manning's recovery. But who knows, maybe they would? If so, would you be outraged if he used them to save his career, save his season?

There's a real issue underlying his hypothetical. Over the past month, the National Football League Players Association has tussled with the NFL over an HGH testing regime. For the millionth time, we're talking here about a test of dubious efficacy for a substance of uncertain benefits. All you really need to know is that the NFL stands squarely on the side of the World Anti-Doping Agency, which is an organization of shrieking, for-profit hysterics who still talk about banning caffeine. Nevertheless, HGH testing has been covered in the press primarily as a matter of union intransigence in the face of the league's supposedly common-sensical wish to rid the game of the PED scourge. But for the million-and-first time, the performance-enhancing properties of HGH are still an open question, and more to the point, an NFL season without PEDs is an NFL season that ends about half-past mini-camp. (Back in August, when the league first announced plans to implement HGH testing, the lads at Pro Football Talk rightly said it was "more about public relations than anything else," then bizarrely added that the NFL "deserves kudos"?as if policy should be graded on its effectiveness as brand management, not on its actual merits. C'mon, guys. Who let David Gergen into the press box?)

Of course, Whitlock is making a different argument here, and I think it's a good one: What happens if we find out that this stuff works? How does anyone make the moral case against extending the career of the best quarterback in NFL history? We've come to terms with the use of cortisone, without which the NFL would cease to exist altogether. How much longer can we keep the PED argument on that vanishingly thin line between enhancement and simple maintenance? (An NFL career is basically an ongoing campaign in not getting killed. Anything?a needle prick in the elbow, say?that lets you take the field when you might otherwise sit is, ipso facto, performance enhancement.) According to Fox Sports, Manning flew to Europe for a stem-cell procedure that evidently didn't work. All the tired old PED arguments are applicable here?it's not "natural"; it's an unfair advantage; it screws with the sanctity of the record books?but no one, that I've seen, has trotted them out. That's a good thing, but it also tells me that sports types care about those arguments only to the extent that they can be fit into the prevailing hysterias of the day.

Single-sex schooling does not improve academic performance and can lead to gender stereotyping

ScienceDaily (Sep. 22, 2011) ? While many parents chose to put their children in single-sex schools and anecdotal evidence may show these schools perform excellently, there is no well-designed research that demonstrates that these schools improve student's academic performance. There is, however, evidence that sex segregation increases gender stereotyping among children and teachers and legitimizes institutional sexism.

These findings are the focus of a new article that examines "The Pseudoscience of Single-Sex Schooling," published in the Sept. 23, 2011, issue of the journal Science. Authored by researchers in ASU's School of Social and Family Dynamics and social scientists from other universities, the article presents information for parents to consider when they are choosing an educational setting for their children.

Teaching boys and girls separately has become increasingly popular during recent years with at least 500 public school single-sex classrooms currently in the United States.

"Though public sentiment may have strengthened in support of such settings for improving the learning environment and outcomes for both boys and girls, the science is just not there to support this," said Richard Fabes, an author of the Science article and director of the School of Social and Family Dynamics in ASU's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Fabes and the other co-authors cite evidence to the contrary, including a U.S. Department of Education review comparing single-sex and coeducational outcomes, which concluded that results of both are equal. Similar large-scale reviews in Great Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand found little overall difference between single-sex and mixed-sex academic outcomes.

In addition, claims that boys and girls learn differently is not supported by brain research since neuroscientists have found few sex differences in children's brains beyond the larger volume of boys' brains and the earlier completion of girls' brain growth, neither of which is known to relate to learning, the article states. Differences among the sexes can grow in sex-segregated environments, making positive interactions between boys and girls constrained, the social scientists write. "Positive and cooperative interaction with members of other groups is an effective method for improving intergroup relationships," according to the authors. There is evidence, however, that sex segregation increases gender divisions among children, according to the article. "Separating boys and girls in public school classrooms makes gender very salient, and this salience reinforces stereotypes and sexism," Fabes said.

The social scientists noted that research shows that children exposed to environments where individuals are labeled and segregated along some characteristic -- gender, eye color, or randomly assigned t-shirt groups -- infer that the groups differ in important ways and develop biases in their individual groups. "Is it ever good to segregate on the basis of race, income or age? I think the answer is no," Fabes said. "There is no good evidence that it is ever a good time to separate and segregate. Any form of segregation undermines rather than promotes equality."
