East Coast braces for Hurricane Irene (Reuters)

WILMINGTON, North Carolina (Reuters) ? As North Carolina braced on Friday for a direct hit from Hurricane Irene, cities along the East Coast were on alert and millions of beach goers cut short vacations to escape the powerful storm.

With more than 50 million people potentially in Irene's path, residents stocked up on food and water and worked to secure homes, vehicles and boats. States, cities, ports, oil refineries and nuclear plants scrambled to activate emergency plans.

"I filled my tank up with gas in case I need to leave in a hurry or something, and get a lot of food supplies, taking everything out of my yard ... anything that can fly into a window," said Patricia Stapleton of Newport, North Carolina.

Irene lashed the low-lying Bahamas on Thursday and was expected to hit North Carolina on Saturday before heading up the coast to New York and beyond.

Irene weakened slightly early on Friday -- to a Category 2 hurricane from a Category 3 on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale -- but still was packing winds of up to 110 miles per hour (175 km per hour).

At 5 a.m. EDT, its center was about 420 miles south-southwest of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.

"Some re-intensification is possible today and Irene is expected to be near the threshold between Category Two and Three as it reaches the North Carolina coast," the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

Coastal evacuations were under way in North Carolina and were ordered for beach resorts in Virginia, Delaware and Maryland. Airlines began to cut flights at eastern airports, made plans to move aircraft from the region and encouraged travelers to consider postponing trips.

"All the major metropolitan areas along the northeast are going to be impacted," National Hurricane Center Director Bill Read told Reuters Insider. "Being a large hurricane, tropical storm-force winds will extend far inland."

'HORRENDOUS DAY FOR TRAVEL'

Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell urged residents to seek shelter by Friday night, before the winds kick up.

"Saturday is going to be a horrendous day for travel. There will be roads and bridges closed," he said.

Anticipating severe storm damage in North Carolina, U.S. President Barack Obama declared an emergency on Thursday, authorizing federal aid to support that state's response. The governors of North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York and Connecticut also declared emergencies.

Even if the center of Irene stays offshore as it tracks up the coast, its heavy winds and rain could lash cities like Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York and knock out power, forecasters said.

Armored Syrian forces raid region near Iraq border (Reuters)

AMMAN (Reuters) ? Armored Syrian forces killed one person and arrested dozens in raids on a tribal region near the border with Iraq on Wednesday, activists said, in their latest effort to subdue dissent against President Bashar al-Assad.

A force of 20-30 tanks and other Armored vehicles entered neighborhoods in the town of Mayadeen and the nearby village of Alburhama in the eastern province of Deir al-Zor, before withdrawing to the outskirts, they said.

"They are mainly hit-and-run raids. The military is trying to avoid reprisals from the population, which is heavily armed. So they go in quickly to arrest people, sabotaging houses of wanted activists they cannot find," a local activist told Reuters by telephone.

The authorities have in the past allowed eastern Arab tribes to arm themselves, as a counterweight to Syria's nearby Kurdish minority and partly to bolster support for Assad and his father, the late President Bashar al-Assad, who are from Syria's minority Alawite sect.

But the five-month uprising for political freedoms has disrupted old agreements that have been key to 41-years of Assad family rule of Syria. Deir al-Zor, the provincial capital, saw some of the largest protests, prompting Assad to send tanks into the city earlier this month.

Residents say that assault on Deir al-Zor killed at least 40 civilians and that hundreds of people have been arrested in the last three weeks in the province, with one activists' group putting the number as high as 3,000.

The U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights said this week more than 2,200 people have been killed in Assad's crackdown, with his forces continuing "to employ excessive force, including heavy artillery" to quell peaceful demonstrations.

Assad says he is facing a foreign conspiracy to divide Syria, with the authorities blaming "armed terrorist groups" for the bloodshed. They say that 500 police and military personnel have been also killed.

Eastern Syria, including Kurdish northeast, produces all of Syria's 380,000 barrels of daily crude oil output.

Mountain lions have residents on edge in Burbank, Glendale hills

Several recent mountain lion sightings in the Burbank area are raising safety concerns among some hillside residents who say the animals pose a threat to pets and small children.

Burbank police have logged at least four mountain lion sightings this summer, including two this month. Another resident reported seeing a lion about 9 p.m. Monday in Glendale, but animal control officials didn't investigate because the call was a day late, said Ricky Whitman, a spokeswoman for the Pasadena Humane Society.

"It's not uncommon to see them in the foothills and we know that they are there," she said.

Still, Whitman said residents often mistake coyotes and bobcats for mountain lions because they are similar in shape and size.

Burbank residents reported seeing what they thought was a mountain lion feeding on a dead deer early Sunday in the foothill neighborhood of Viewcrest Drive and Reynolds Drive, but Burbank Police Lt. John Dilibert said wildlife experts confirmed that a coyote had killed the deer.

The experts cited bite marks on the deer and animal tracks at the scene.

Coyotes were also spotted about a month ago in the Glendale foothills, prompting animal control and police officials to issue public warnings, said Glendale Police Sgt. Tom Lorenz.

Sun Valley resident Carlo Spiga reported seeing a mountain lion climbing over a chain-link fence in his backyard last week. He was alerted to the cat by his dog's barking.

In the past, Spiga said, he has photographed mountain lion tracks in his yard and discovered a resting spot. But his most recent encounter was different, he said. Spiga flashed a light at the lion, but it didn't run away.

"He just kind of froze and I just kind of froze," Spiga said.

The lion instead moved slowly over the fence as if it was unbothered by the light and Spiga's presence, he said. Although the lion eventually took off, Spiga said the encounter was unsettling.

"I have a 4-year-old daughter and 10-year-old girl," he said. "I am just seriously scared."

The lion was probably hunting Spiga's dog, said Andrew Hughan, a spokesman for the California Department of Fish and Game.

"If the mountain lion was hungry, they don't look at people for food," he said.

In 2009, officials determined that a mountain lion killed an 85-pound German shepherd/Akita mix while it slept on a backyard patio in Glendale. The dog was found with a deep gash extending from the base of its head to its tail.

Officials said there isn't much to be done about the wildlife population besides taking precautions for pets and small children. Mountain lions often avoid people and prefer to eat deer, pets and livestock, officials said.

"Usually, they don't really like people very much," Whitman said.

Still, officials warned that pets and children shouldn't be left unattended, especially amid multiple sightings.

"It's better to be safe than sorry," Hughan said.

Dollar Thrifty seeks best bids from Avis, Hertz

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group Inc <DTG.N>, the object of a takeover battle between rivals Hertz Global Holdings Inc <HTZ.N> and Avis Budget Group Inc <CAR.O>, said on Sunday it wants best and final offers from the suitors by early October.

Dollar Thrifty said both car rental companies have made substantial progress with regulatory reviews, and that the time has come for best and final definitive proposals.

"Continuing uncertainty is in no one`s best interest," said Dollar Thrifty's Chief Executive Scott Thompson.

"Based on the results of this process, we will consider what actions would be in the best interests of Dollar Thrifty and its shareholders," Thompson said in a letter to the CEOs of both Avis and Hertz.

Avis and Hertz were not immediately available to comment.

Thompson cautioned that any proposal that required Dollar Thrify shareholders to assume any portion of the risk of antitrust review would unlikely be acceptable.

Consolidation in the U.S. car rental market has left just four major rivals -- Hertz, Avis, Dollar Thrifty and industry leader, privately held Enterprise. As a result, antitrust concerns have emerged as a key factor in the battle for Dollar Thrifty.

Earlier this month, the Federal Trade Commission asked Hertz for additional information regarding its proposed takeover of Dollar Thrifty.

Avis is still seeking antitrust approval for its offer.

Dollar Thrifty recently posted second-quarter results below analysts' expectations, hurt by lower per-day revenue, and forecast 2011 revenue to be flat if per-day rental rates remained under pressure in the second half.

The company said on Sunday it was positioned for "continued strong performance in 2012."

"We are optimistic about our future but it`s clear that bringing closure one way or another to the process with Hertz and Avis is in the best interests of our shareholders, the company and our employees," Dollar Thrifty said in a statement.

The battle for Dollar Thrifty has dragged on for 16 months. In May, Hertz offered close to $2.1 billion for Dollar Thrifty, taking advantage of Avis' problems getting regulatory clearance for a rival bid.

Hertz's sweetened offer was more than 30 percent higher than its previous bid and far above the $1.7 billion bid from Avis Budget Group Inc <CAR.O>.

After Avis acquired its European namesake in June for about $1 billion, Wall Street's expectations of a higher bid from Avis have significantly come down.

Evil humans? E.T. study sparks NASA flap

Are there scenarios in which the aliens would consider terminating our command with extreme prejudice? That sounds almost exactly like the premise of "The Day the Earth Stood Still."

A study that reviews a host of sci-fi scenarios for contact with extraterrestrials stirred up such a ruckus today that NASA had to step in and distance itself from the research. The controversy focuses on the idea that E.T. could well decide that we're a threat to interstellar order, and therefore we have to be stopped before we spread.

The report itself, published in the journal Acta Astronautica, covers ground that's familiar to dedicated fans of E.T. lore. For example,?the?premise of the 1951 sci-fi classic?"The Day the Earth Stood Still" is that?universalist-minded aliens see our civilization as so rooted in violence that?it's better to snuff us out than let us?ruin the neighborhood. (The 2008 remake, starring Keanu Reeves, recycled that idea with an environmental theme.)

Then there's the?"Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" scenario, in which Earth is destroyed merely to make way for a new stretch of intergalactic infrastructure.

"At the heart of these scenarios is the possibility that intrinsic?value may be more efficiently produced in our absence," the researchers write.

The most familiar sci-fi scenario is the one in which the aliens are as selfish and territorial as we are, and want to wipe us out or enslave us?and take our stuff. Think "War of the Worlds" or "Independence Day." In such cases, the researchers note that?there's the?potential for big payoffs ... if we prevail.

"Humanity benefits not only from the major moral victory of having defeated a daunting rival but also from the opportunity to reverse-engineer ETI [extraterrestrial intelligence] technology," they write. Indeed, New York Times columnist Paul Krugman joked last weekend that a fake alien invasion might be just the thing to spark an economic turnaround.

The researchers touch on more benign scenarios as well ? for example, the "Star Trek" scenario, in which helpful aliens welcome us into the United Federation of Planets because we're all basically good guys (as opposed to those evil Klingons, until they become good guys, too). And then there's something like the?"E.T." scenario, in which the aliens mostly just want to stay out of our way.

The 33-page study reflects?at length on the potential risks.

"The possibility of harmful contact with ETI suggests that we may use some caution for METI [sending messages to extaterrestrial intelligence]," the researchers write. "Given that we have already altered our environment in ways that may be viewed as unethical by universalist ETI, it may be prudent to avoid sending any message that shows evidence of our negative environmental impact. The chemical composition of Earth's atmosphere over recent time may be a poor choice for a message because it would show a rapid accumulation of carbon dioxide from human activity. Likewise, any message that indicates widespread loss of biodiversity or rapid rates of expansion may be dangerous if received by such universalist ETI."

In short, let's keep our environmental bad habits?on the down low, so as not to get the sad-Keanu E.T.'s on our case.

The basis of the brouhaha
By themselves, these ideas are not all that, um, alien. For years, sci-fi author David Brin has advised keeping quiet?about our existence, and celebrity physicist Stephen Hawking agrees. U.N. officials and scientific experts also say the messages we direct toward any aliens we come across would have to be carefully managed.

So what's the big deal? Well, one of the authors of the paper, Shawn Domagal-Goldman,?happens to be a postdoctoral student working at NASA Headquarters ? and that highly tenuous connection to the world's most influential space agency sparked a huge wave of scare headlines. It started with The Guardian's story, and rolled onto The Drudge Report's webpage with a headline reading "NASA REPORT: Aliens may destroy humanity to protect other civlizations..." Another variant was this one: "NASA: Aliens May Destroy Humanity Over Greenhouse Gases."

Eventually, NASA?had to send out a Twitter update saying "Yes, @drudge and @guardiannews are mistaken about an 'alien'?report. It's not NASA research. Ask the report's author...."?The space agency followed up later with two more tweets, emphasizing that it was not involved in the study and saying that Fox News and CNN "have it wrong."

In each case, NASA linked to a lengthy?clarification and apology from Domagal-Goldman, who made clear that the study was not a "NASA report," that no NASA funding was expended on it, and that he spent none of his working hours?on writing the paper. He said?his two co-authors, Seth Baum and Jacob Haqq-Misra of Pennsylvania State University, "put in the vast majority of work on it."

"It was just a fun paper written by a few friends, one of whom happens to have a NASA affiliation," Domagal-Goldman wrote.

He admitted that including the NASA affiliation turned out to be a "horrible mistake":

"I did so because that is my current academic affiliation. But when I did so I did not realize the full implications that has. I'm deeply sorry for that, but it was a mistake born out of carelessness and inexperience and nothing more. I will do what I can to rectify this, including distributing this post to the Guardian, Drudge and NASA Watch. Please help me spread this post to the other places you may see the article inaccurately attributed to NASA.

"One last thing: I stand by the analysis in the paper. Is such a scenario likely? I don't think so. But it's one of a myriad of possible (albeit unlikely) scenarios, and the point of the paper was to review them. But remember?? and this is key?? it's me standing for the paper ... not the full weight of the National Aeronautics and Space?Administration. For anything?I have done to mis-convey that to those covering the story, to the public, or to the fine employees of NASA, I apologize."

This isn't the first case where the NASA connection has become entangled in scientific speculation. In March, the space agency took great pains to distance itself from NASA researcher Richard Hoover's claims to have found evidence of?outer-space organisms?in meteorites.

In Domagal-Gordon's case, the?substance was far less controversial. As I've tried to point out above, the views expressed in the paper aren't that far off from the typical science-blog fare. Discussing his $20,000 fine for slamming Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton to the ground, Suh said the things he does on the field look worse than they are because referees aren?t accustomed to seeing players as strong as he is.

?Honestly, I really feel that I put the refs in a tough situation because of my strength,? Suh said.

That might sound like bragging, but there?s a lot of truth to it: Suh is such a powerful athlete that his hits probably look a lot more violent to us mere mortals than they feel to him. That was the case last year when Suh was flagged and fined for a hit on Jay Cutler: Suh brought so much force to the hit that it looked violent, but he appeared to shove Cutler in the back of the shoulder pads, which is legal.

But just because Suh is capable of slamming the 215-pound Dalton to the ground with ease doesn?t mean he should be allowed to do it. That hit definitely deserved a flag and a fine.

Suh says he recognizes the importance of protecting players from illegal hits, but he also says it?s important for the NFL to remember that there are going to be big hits in the NFL as long as big guys like him are playing.

?A lot of us players growing up and coming in, we?re getting faster, stronger, and some guys just have incredible strength on that football field,? Suh said. ?So I feel like we put them in tough situations, and with the new rules and the different situation of safety ? which definitely should be something that should be applied on both sides of the ball ? we definitely put them in tough situations, so they have to make the right judgment. I?m not going to fault them for making a call that they?re erring on the safer side, because safety is important. Suh said he will appeal the $20,000 fine, and he said no fine will change the way he plays.

?I?m never going to put myself in a situation where I can allow a play to affect my team because I didn?t follow through on my job,? Suh said. ?So I?m not going to stop playing hard. Like I said before, I owe it to my fans, I owe it to my teammates, I owe it to the coaches, and I owe it to the fans, first and foremost. That?s the reason why they watch the game. It?s one of the reasons football is football.?

Syria forces hold hundreds in Latakia sports stadium (Reuters)

AMMAN (Reuters) ? Syrian troops raided houses in a Sunni district of the besieged port of Latakia on Wednesday, residents said, arresting hundreds of people and taking them to a stadium after a four-day tank assault to crush protests against President Bashar al-Assad.

Assad forces attacked al-Raml al-Filistini (Palestinian sand), named after a refugee camp built in the 1950s, at the weekend, as part of a campaign to crush a five-month uprising, which has intensified against major urban centers of protest since the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan on August 1.

Latakia is of particular significance to Assad, from Syria's minority Alawite community. The 45-year-old president, a self-declared champion of the Palestinian cause, comes from a village to the southeast, where his father is buried. The Assad family, along with friends, control the city's port and its finances.

"Shelling and the sound of tank machineguns subdued today. They are bussing hundreds to the Sports City from al-Raml. People who are picked up randomly from elsewhere in Latakia are also being take there," said a resident, referring to a complex that was venue for the Mediterranean Games in the 1980s.

"Tanks are continuing to deploy, they are now in the main Thawra (revolution) street," said the resident, a university student who did not want to be identified.

A diplomat in the Syrian capital said: "The reports about detention conditions and torture are increasingly alarming. Assad is backing himself more into a corner by using more and more violence and turning more Syrians against him."

Turkey's Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan compared the situation in Syria with that in Libya, where rebels have been fighting forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi since February.

"We have done our best on Libya, but haven't been able to generate any results. So it's an international issue now. Gaddafi could not meet our expectations, and the outcome was obvious," Erdogan told reporters.

"Now the same situation is going on in Syria. I've sent my foreign minister, and personally got in touch many times, the last of them three days ago on the phone. In spite of all this, civilians are still getting killed."

Citing witnesses in Latakia, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said a force of around 700 security personnel fanned across al-Raml, with houses being demolished in the neighborhood "on the pretext they lacked construction permits."

"The Sports City's stadiums are serving to house refugees and prevent them from fleeing outside Latakia, and as we have seen in other cities that were assaulted, as a detention center," Observatory Director Rami Abdelrahman told Reuters.

A Palestinian official described the military offensive in Latakia as "a crime against humanity," adding to Arab and international outrage at Assad's crackdown on popular demonstrations calling for an end to his autocratic rule.

CHORUS OF CONDEMNATION

Assad had sought to improve his image internationally in the last years by emphasizing economic reforms, engaging in peace talks with Israel and accepting Western overtures to lessen his isolation in return for cooperating on Lebanon and Iraq.

But he has also strengthened ties with Iran's clerical rulers and the militant Lebanese Shi'ite guerrilla group Hezbollah, his two remaining solid allies, to the disquiet of Syria's Sunni Muslim population.

Some Palestinians in Syria have even joined the demonstrations, although Assad hosts Hamas's exiled leaders and other Palestinian militant groups.

Assad's crackdown has caused a chorus of international condemnation. "The bloodshed has to stop, first and foremost," Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said. "If the operations continue in Syria and the operations become a regional problem Turkey can naturally not remain indifferent."

The Local Coordination Committees said Assad's forces killed at least two people in Latakia on Tuesday, including 13-year-old Mohammad Shohan, hit by sniper fire in the impoverished al-Raml al-Filistini area, bringing the death toll to 36 in four days.

The activists' group said the death toll was probably higher, but roadblocks and disrupted communications made it hard to gather information on casualties in the stricken city.

Assad, who inherited power in 2000 from his father, clearly believes overwhelming force will extinguish calls for the dismantling of the police state and the Assad clan's power monopoly, free elections and an end to corruption.

For Assad to enact the reforms he has been promising since he came to power, he would have to purge his strongest allies and end the control of the security apparatus over the state. Since they are the pillars of his power, that is unlikely.

Assad, who says the protests are largely a foreign conspiracy to divide Syria, has been told by the United States, European Union and Turkey to halt the bloodshed but said last week his army would "not relent in pursuing terrorist groups."

Syria has expelled most independent media since the unrest began, making it difficult to verify reports from the country.

A security official cited by Syria's official state news agency said security forces backed by an army unit had completed a mission in Latakia's al-Raml neighborhood against "armed terrorist groups who have terrorized the citizens."

Unlike most of the rest of Syria, which is predominately Sunni, Latakia has a big Alawite population, encouraged to move there by offers from the ruling minority family of cheap land and jobs in the security apparatus and public sector.

PALESTINIANS FLEE CAMP

A senior Palestinian official condemned the Latakia violence, which the United Nations said had forced between 5,000 and 10,000 Palestinians to flee the al-Raml refugee camp.

"The shelling is taking place using gunships and tanks on houses built from tin, on people who have no place to run to or even a shelter to hide in," Yasser Abed Rabbo, the West Bank-based PLO secretary general, told Reuters on Tuesday.

"This is a crime against humanity."

The United Nations agency which cares for Palestinian refugees said on Monday four had been killed and 17 wounded.

Apart from Deir al-Zor and Latakia, Syrian forces have already stormed Hama, scene of a 1982 massacre by the military under Assad's father, the southern city of Deraa and several northwestern towns in a province bordering Turkey.

Syrian authorities blame others for the violence, saying terrorist groups" have killed 500 soldiers and police. Rights organizations say at least 1,700 civilians have been killed by security forces since protests erupted in March.

Report: Players got gifts from Miami booster (AP)

Nevin Shapiro, a former Miami booster who is serving a 20-year prison sentence for masterminding a $930 million Ponzi scheme, has told Yahoo! Sports he provided impermissible benefits to 72 of the university's football players and other athletes between 2002 and 2010.

Shapiro said he gave money, cars, yacht trips, jewelry, televisions and other gifts to a list of players including Vince Wilfork, Jon Beason, Antrel Rolle, Devin Hester, Willis McGahee and the late Sean Taylor. Shapiro also claimed he paid for nightclub outings, sex parties, restaurant meals and in one case, an abortion for a woman impregnated by a player. One former Miami player, running back Tyrone Moss, told Yahoo! Sports he accepted $1,000 from Shapiro around the time he was entering college.

"Hell yeah, I recruited a lot of kids for Miami," Shapiro told Yahoo! Sports. "With access to the clubs, access to the strip joints. My house. My boat. We're talking about high school football players. Not anybody can just get into the clubs or strip joints. Who is going to pay for it and make it happen? That was me."

Shapiro has said multiple times in the past year, including in the Yahoo! Sports story posted Tuesday, that he is angry with several of the players he claims to have helped when they were Hurricanes. Miami officials began cooperating with NCAA investigators not long after Shapiro made claims about his involvement with players last year. University president Donna Shalala and athletic director Shawn Eichorst were questioned by the NCAA this week. The school reiterated Tuesday it takes the allegations seriously.

"I can tell you what I think is going to happen," Shapiro told Miami television station WFOR from federal prison in Atlanta. "Death penalty."

Yahoo! Sports says it spent 100 hours interviewing Shapiro over the span of 11 months and audited thousands of pages of financial and business records to examine his claims.

The allegations against Miami have sparked what is just the latest in a string of NCAA investigations involving some of college football's most high-profile and successful programs. In the last 18 months, the football teams at Southern California, Ohio State, Auburn, Oregon, Michigan, North Carolina, Georgia Tech and LSU all have either been investigated or sanctioned by the NCAA.

The litany of scandals has led to calls for major reforms in the way the NCAA regulates and polices big-time college athletics. Commissioners of the major conferences, including Mike Slive from the Southeastern Conference and Jim Delany from the Big Ten, have called for major changes and increased penalties for rule-breakers. Last week, NCAA President Mark Emmert led a group of university presidents in laying out an outline for changes, including raising academic standards, streamlining the rulebook and changing the parameters of athletic scholarships.

Shapiro was sentenced in June after he admitted to securities fraud and money laundering. He was also ordered to pay more than $82 million in restitution to his victims.

Many current Miami players also were named by Shapiro as receiving benefits, Yahoo! Sports reported, including quarterback Jacory Harris, Ray Ray Armstrong, Travis Benjamin, Sean Spence, Marcus Forston, Vaughn Telemaque, Dyron Dye, Aldarius Johnson and Olivier Vernon. Former Miami quarterback Robert Marve, now at Purdue, also was named by Shapiro, Yahoo! Sports said. Purdue officials declined to comment on the Marve mention.

The story cited specifics involving only Armstrong, Dye and Vernon, alleging they received extra benefits as recruits. Shapiro said he worked in concert with several former Miami assistant coaches during the recruiting process.

"It was me and some other players with my incoming (class). I'm not going to say the names but you can probably figure them out yourself," Moss told Yahoo! Sports. "When I was getting there my freshman year, it was me and a couple more players. It was me and a few more of the guys in my incoming class that he kind of showed some love to."

Miami coach Al Golden, who was hired in December, acknowledged Tuesday that some of his players may have made mistakes.

"We'll stay focused. I'm certain of that," Golden said. "We're disappointed but we're not discouraged. And again, there's going to be a life lesson here. We're talking about allegations from a man that's behind bars, now. If these do hold some truth, then we'll deal with them. There's no other way to do it."

Current Miami players were not made available to comment Tuesday, and will not be made available before Wednesday's practice, the university said.

Yahoo! Sports also said Shapiro paid Wilfork $50,000 as a recruiting tool to sign with sports agency Axcess Sports & Entertainment, a firm Shapiro claimed he co-owned for much of the time he was involved with the Hurricanes. Yahoo! Sports reported players got cash and benefits through Shapiro's partner, former NFL agent and current UFL commissioner Michael Huyghue.

Reached Tuesday by The Associated Press, Huyghue denied that story.

"It's just fantasy," Huyghue said. "He never had any role in my company."

Huyghue said he signed three Miami players in seven years. He said Shapiro was not a runner and he did not represent any players, but did invest $1.5 million in his agency in 2001 and that the two spoke only occasionally.

"He didn't have the acumen to represent players," Huyghue said.

Meanwhile, at least one player named by Shapiro said he did try to steer them toward agents.

"I know of (Shapiro)," said Hester, now with the Chicago Bears. "At the time I was going into the draft, he was like a runner for an agent. I had declared into the draft. He was one of the runners for one agent."

Hester would not say which agent.

Golden said he emailed his team "every day this summer" about avoiding problems that recently hit other schools, and he specifically mentioned North Carolina, Georgia Tech and Ohio State. He said his players have a "Cane Code" reminding them about such issues.

"We've got to make sure the third parties stay away from our student-athletes," Golden said.

_Shapiro said he paid basketball recruit DeQuan Jones $10,000 to secure his commitment. Jones, a part-time starter last year, is now a senior with the Hurricanes.

_At least six coaches and as many as 10 athletic department employees overall were allegedly aware of Shapiro's illicit activity, including former basketball coach Frank Haith, now at Missouri. All the coaches named by Shapiro have since left Miami. Haith lashed out at the story in a statement released through Missouri late Tuesday.

"I am more than happy to cooperate with the national office on this issue and look forward to a quick resolution," Haith said. "The NCAA has instructed me not to comment further at this time in order to protect the integrity of their review, so I appreciate your understanding in this matter. The reports questioning my personal interactions with Mr. Shapiro are not an accurate portrayal of my character."

_Shapiro said he paid for 39 different players to receive sex from prostitutes. He also claimed to have offered a $5,000 bounty to any player who could knock Florida State quarterback Chris Rix out of a game, provided players access to his multimillion-dollar home and yacht, and even alleges he bought rims for Hester's sport-utility vehicle.

"I did it because I could," Shapiro said of his spending. "And because nobody stepped in to stop me."

Shapiro's relationship with the program dates back about a decade. Some of the alleged incidents occurred in the past four years, which would be within the NCAA's statute of limitations regarding violations.

Miami officials said that when Shapiro first made his allegations nearly a year ago, he and his attorneys refused to provide any facts to the school.

"The university notified the NCAA enforcement officials of these allegations," the school said in a statement Tuesday morning. "We are fully cooperating with the NCAA and are conducting a joint investigation. The University of Miami takes these matters very seriously."

After Yahoo! Sports posted its story Tuesday afternoon, the university released another statement, saying it "takes any allegations seriously, and will continue to cooperate fully in a joint investigation with the NCAA."

When Shapiro was sentenced, the U.S. Attorney's Office said he "used investor funds to make payments to dozens of student athletes who were attending a local university in the Miami area to which Shapiro made significant donations ... cash in amounts up to $10,000 and gifts such as jewelry and entertainment at nightclubs and restaurants in Miami Beach. As a result of a 10-year gift to the university, its Student-Athlete Lounge was named for Shapiro."

The University of Miami was not specifically mentioned in that release, but the school temporarily named its lounge for Shapiro. His name was removed in 2008 after the school said he did not follow his pledged donation-payment plan.
