Digital Vertigo

Are Facebook and Twitter really forms of "an absurd global prison where we are all forced to live in public?? Author and Silicon Valley entrepreneur Andrew Keen is afraid that the answer is yes.

The Internet has been good at spawning neologisms. One that is particularly indicative of the times is ?twitchfork mob:? a group of people using Twitter to protest, harangue, or expose people they don?t like or agree with. In 2011, after the British High Court barred media from revealing the identity of a soccer player who had an extra-marital affair, over 70,000 people took to Twitter to name and shame the sportsman.

It is this ?dumb herd? ? and more broadly what he sees as the cult of social media ? that author and Silicon Valley entrepreneur Andrew Keen takes on in Digital Vertigo. ?Internet browsers, search engines, and e-mail services ? the trinity of technologies that shape our daily Internet use ? are becoming social,? Keen writes. If you have a start-up in Silicon Valley, chances are it?s social, whether it?s social gaming or social ice-cream making.

All of this, according to Keen, is a very bad thing. Social media is ?actually splintering our identities so that we always exist outside ourselves, unable to concentrate on the here-and-now, too wedded to our own image, perpetually revealing our current location, our privacy sacrificed to the utilitarian tyranny of a collective network.? Rather than bringing us together, Keen argues, social media is dividing us.

Despite what Mark Zuckerberg might think, Keen argues vehemently that we shouldn?t allow our privacy to slip away. He skewers the idea of ?publicness? held by web theorists such as journalism school professor Jeff Jarvis. According to Keen, Jarvis argues that living in public ?will result in a more tolerant society because everything will be known about everyone and thus traditional social taboos, such as homosexuality, will supposedly be undermined.?

That, as Keen points out, is wishful thinking. One of the problems is that we tend to value other people?s privacy less than our own ? and social media has democratized the business of exposure. The social media and privacy maximalists might cheer when the good folks of Twitter out a footballer for having an affair but they might feel differently about social-media-fueled people power when a collective of pro-lifers on Facebook publishes photos of their daughter entering an abortion clinic.

Keen takes on the digital evangelists with their overblown and self-serving claims about the power of the Internet to revolutionize society and bring human salvation. He pours water on the notion that the Internet is helping us rediscover a lost oral and participatory culture and community. Anyone who has ever seen the racist hashtags that occasionally crop up on Twitter, or the legions of extremist, hate-filled Groups on Facebook would know that such sentiments are well meaning but up in the clouds.

Assess Your Serious Relationship Readiness | BettyAnn Daily

Have you ever stopped and thought, Im just not ready for a serious relationship! Some people are thoughtless and try to avoid meaningful or heartfelt discussion by taking the easy road (by saying they are not ready for a serious relationship). Some of these folks may even end up in a relationship with another person soon after they end it with you. What this really means is they didnt want a serious relationship with you.

When people meet others they are interested in, its human nature to desire them, to want to spend time with them, and to hope for exclusivity. People MAKE TIME for the things that are important and matter to them. They make the other person a priority and focus in their life. They drop all of the excuses and focus on nurturing the relationship. They also crave trust and respect in the relationship. If someone is constantly making excuses for the reasons why they cant spend time with you, the chances are, youre just not that important to them.
Dont waste your time and energy focusing on someone who constantly gives you the run-around and makes excuses for their ill-behavior. Chances are, they crave their freedom, but want their cookies too. Refuse to be their pawn and to be there for their whims! Its no fun to sit around and only be wanted when its convenient for them.

Some people insulate themselves because they are not ready for a serious relationship. They may do this by entering into relationships with unavailable people, by choosing the wrong people, or by sabotaging their relationships. There are many reasons why someone may not be ready for a relationship. These reasons may include but not be limited to the experience of a past trauma they have not effectively dealt with, immaturity, lack of desire, trust issues, etc
To assess your serious relationship readiness, it may be helpful to answer a few questions.

Would be ready to care for your partner for life if they were permanently disabled or ill?

Are you ready to be honest with your partner about everything at all times?

Are you ready to discontinue ties to your former romantic partners?

Are you ready to include someone in EVERY aspect of your life?

Are you ready to at times, put someones needs ahead of your own?

While there is no right or wrong to these questions, they should be used as a tool to inspire thought when assessing your serious relationship readiness.

Conscious Change Leadership: Mastering the Six Pillars Required to Succeed at Transformation

Our thirty years of action research has surfaced six requirements leaders need to master to succeed in transforming their organizations for the realities of today?s business environment. These six foundations comprise an advanced approach to transformation: Conscious Change Leadership. Beyond change management, and even beyond change leadership, transformation demands more of leaders?to be proactive, aware of a broader set of organizational and human dynamics, inclusive, and able to design and lead the process of transformation in co-creative ways. This session describes the six pillars of Conscious Change Leadership and provides pragmatic tools and strategies to succeed at each. Conscious Change Leadership is not a quick-fix approach; it is a serious reinvention of leadership for leaders who already recognize that past practices will not get us where our organizations need to go. Leaders must develop themselves so they can do what is truly needed and model it in the organization. If you want breakthrough results, stepping out of the box into Conscious Change Leadership is your gateway.

Leading Transformation: Navigating Your Way to the Future

Transformational change has become the predominant type of change challenging organizations today. It is the least understood, and by far, the hardest to navigate successfully. This presentation defines transformational change, highlighting its unique requirements, and explores how leaders need to transform their traditional practices to be successful in their changing reality. We will present the three essential areas requiring leadership attention from the beginning, the need for a change process roadmap, and how to set up change infrastructures fit for transformation. We will discuss the predictable people dynamics that make the ride so challenging, and how to prepare the organization for the roller coaster of transformation so that people can more consciously expect its complexity, respond rapidly, and succeed at it.

Master the Human Dynamics of Change

One of the most common complaints we hear from leaders of changing organizations is that their people are resistant, confused, and slowing down progress. Why is it so hard to get your people mobilized behind the changes your organization needs to succeed? Why aren?t your managers taking the ball and running with it? This keynote provides you with much-needed understanding about the importance of mastering the people dynamics of change. It offers pragmatic strategies to set up your changes so your people will actually understand your new directions, support the work, and want to give their all to succeed. Explore what threatens and produces resistance, and how to turn people?s resistance into commitment. Learn how to design your changes to meet people?s six core needs and strategies to help them excel while working through their natural reactions to change.

This session shows you how to accelerate your change by planning with a people-savvy head and responding to your people with an open heart. The program is interactive, inspirational and personal, and will mobilize your understanding and enthusiasm for aligning your workforce?and yourself!?behind the change results you seek.

Building Your Organization?s Change Capability: Making the Strategic Decision to Succeed at Enterprise Transformation

The complexity, urgency, and magnitude of change have outpaced most organizations? skills at leading and implementing it. The costs of poor change leadership is too high to ignore. The solution is simple. We must build enterprise capability to ensure success in mission-critical changes. That capability takes the form of leading change as a strategic discipline. All organizations employ strategic disciplines and standard practices around key functions?finance, marketing, sales, HR, IT, etc., but overlook this crucial approach when leading change. The five strategic disciplines for change include the Enterprise Change Agenda, using one common change process methodology, establishing change infrastructures, a Change Center of Excellence, and the Strategic Change Office. This presentation is an information-packed session that will alter the way leaders think about leading change at the enterprise level. It will call them into taking proactive steps to ensure that they can succeed all of the organization?s change efforts.

Avoiding the Predictable Mistakes in Leading Change ? or ? Ten Critical Actions to Support the Success of Mission-Critical Changes (Note: This program can be framed as a Risk Assessment on known mistakes in leading change, or as a recommendation of the ten critical actions that leaders can take to consciously support their success in change. The topics are the same, but the positioning is unique to each version.)

In this thought-provoking session for executives, change sponsors, change leaders, and consultants, Ms. Ackerman Anderson shares 35 years of experience on why more than 60% of all change efforts fail and how to avoid the most commonly made mistakes, or, how to proactively set up your change efforts for success from the beginning. No matter what the industry or type of change, audiences will walk away with insights on how to rethink the type of leadership, strategies, and infrastructures they use to drive their most critical change efforts. The recommendations include proven best practices, approaches, and pragmatic tools.

Being the Change: The Change Leader?s Most Potent Strategy for Leading Transformation

When an organization undergoes transformation, its leaders?at all levels?are its most critical catalyst for the changes required. Transformational change demands deep personal change, affecting the leaders? mindsets and behavior. Most leaders pursue the knowledge and skills to lead the change, and inadvertently leave out the personal development that enables them to understand the nature of transformation, the power that their mindsets have over their success, and the requirement that they walk the talk they are asking of the organization. Leaders must become models of the transformation? ?being the change.? This presentation explores the requirements and predictable dynamics of addressing leaders? personal change as central to their capacity to successfully lead the transformations of their organizations in the 21st Century.

Women as Leaders of Change: Women Have What Organization?s Need to?Succeed?at Change

With change rampant in organizations, executives are scrambling to improve their track record in leading change successfully. What?s so often missing, especially in transformational change, are leaders skilled in a host of advanced human competencies?clear strategy, a flexible process roadmap, authentic relationships, emotional maturity, personal courage to model new ways of being, and a community of motivated supporters. Women are naturals at these competencies!

This presentation clarifies what leading transformational change requires and explores why project management and command and control approaches don?t suffice. It features the innate competencies women possess that make them naturally proficient at leading transformation. These natural inclinations of women are needed to plan for and produce results from change, in partnership with the action-oriented talents of men. Discover these competencies in yourself and learn how to apply them to successfully lead your organization through its change efforts.

Satellites provide data to NHC forecasters

Tropical Storm Beryl formed off the Carolina coast on Friday, May 25 as "System 94L" and later that day became the second tropical storm of the Atlantic Hurricane Season, before the season even started. Over the Memorial Day holiday weekend in the U.S. NASA and NOAA satellites kept track of Beryl, feeding forecasters with valuable data.

NASA's Aqua and Terra satellites and NOAA's GOES-13 satellite have been monitoring the progression of Beryl and continue to provide visible, infrared, rainfall, temperature, and other data to forecasters at the National Hurricane Center, in Miami, Fla.

An animation of satellite imagery from NOAA's GOES-13 satellite was created at NASA's GOES Project at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. that shows the birth, landfall and progression of Beryl from May 26 through May 28, 2012.

On May 26 at 1615 UTC (12:15 p.m. EDT), NASA's Terra satellite passed over Tropical Storm Beryl when it was still off the U.S. East coast. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument that flies onboard Terra captured a visible image of the storm that showed its circulation center. To see the image, visit: http://lance-modis.eosdis.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/imagery/single.cgi?image=Beryl.A2012147.1615.1km.jpg.

Later on May 27 at 1835 UTC (2:35 p.m. EDT), NASA's Aqua satellite passed over Beryl and the MODIS instrument on that satellite, like the one on NASA's Terra satellite, captured an image of Beryl over northern Florida. To see that image, visit: http://lance-modis.eosdis.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/imagery/single.cgi?image=Beryl.A2012148.1835.2km.jpg. NASA's Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite was capturing rainfall data on Beryl over the holiday weekend, and on May 27 saw light to moderate rainfall throughout the system with some areas west of the center dropping heavy rain. To see the TRMM image, visit: http://trmm.gsfc.nasa.gov/images_dir/beryl_27may2012_2130_utc_vis-rain_blend.mpg

Beryl made landfall near Jacksonville, Florida at 0410 UTC (12:10 a.m. EDT on Monday, May 28). After making landfall, Beryl's winds dropped to 50 mph (85 kph), down from 70 mph. At 7 a.m. on May 28, Beryl's center was 20 miles (30 km) west of Jacksonville, Fla., and just 85 miles (135 km) east-southeast of Valdosta, Georgia. Beryl continued to move west at 8 mph (13 kph), and had a minimum central pressure of 997 millibars.

Northern Florida, eastern Georgia and coastal South Carolina have all been experiencing drought conditions, so Beryl's rainfall is actually helpful. On Tuesday, May 29, the National Hurricane Center forecast indicated that "Beryl is expected to produce total rain accumulations of 5 to 10 inches, with isolated maximum amounts of 15 inches in Northern Florida and southeastern Georgia. Beryl is expected to produce total rain accumulations of 3 to 6 inches in eastern South Carolina and eastern North Carolina."

On Tuesday, May 29 at 5 a.m. EDT (0900 UTC), Beryl was a tropical depression with maximum sustained winds near 30 mph (45 kph). Beryl's center was located just 10 miles from Valdosta, Georgia, near 30.9 North and 83.4 West. Valdosta is famous for being the boyhood home of Dr. John Holliday, the dentist that fought alongside Wyatt Earp in the shootout near the O.K. Corral in Oct. 1881 in Tombstone, Ariz.

Beryl is crawling to the north at 2 mph (4 kph) and is expected to turn to the northeast and speed up as it heads toward the Atlantic coast.

As Beryl continues its slow trek back to its Atlantic Ocean birthplace, it continues to generate dangerous surf conditions from South Carolina to northern Florida, with rip currents and heavy surf.

Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center expect Beryl to be close to the coast of South Carolina by early Wednesday morning, May 30, and back into the Atlantic Ocean later on that day. Once Beryl moves closer to the warm waters of the Gulf Stream in the Atlantic, it is expected to strengthen and may once again become a tropical storm.

Government of Canada Contributes to advanced equipment for the Holland College Marine Training Centre

Wednesday, May 23, 2012

(L-R) Hon. Ron MacKinley, PEI Minister of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development; Holland College Vice President Michael O'Grady; Clayton Burry, Kongsberg Maritime Simulation; and Hon. Gail Shea, Minister of National Revenue.

The following release has been issued by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency

SUMMERSIDE (PE) - MAY 22, 2012 - The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of National Revenue, and Michael O'Grady, Holland College Vice-President of Innovation, Enterprise and Strategic Development, today announced an investment in new state-of-the-art equipment for Holland College. The new dynamic positioning training equipment and software will allow the institution to keep up with industry demand.

"Holland College has earned an international reputation for quality instruction and this newly acquired equipment will enable the college to offer additional training," said Minister Shea, on behalf of the Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and La Francophonie. "Our Government is pleased to support forward-thinking institutions like Holland College; these investments create job growth and increased economic development in our region."

The Government of Canada, through ACOA, has invested almost $250,000 for this new equipment.

Dynamic positioning systems automatically maintain a ship's position and heading by using its own propellers and thrusters. As manufacturers redesign and refine their equipment, the training demands of the marine industry evolve, so training equipment and software must keep up with industry standards.

Holland College vice president Michael O'Grady said the new equipment will enable the Marine Training Centre to expand its offerings to the marine industry, "This new configuration will allow us to train more people at a time on-state-of-the-art equipment similar to that which is currently being used in oil field construction, platform supply, pipeline and cable laying, as well as other DP applications," he said. "ACOA's investment insures that the Marine Training Centre can continue to provide its clients with accessibility to the equipment and software that is currently being utilized by industry leaders."

The new trainers allow students to practice realistic dynamic positioning operations on their desktop panels and through the graphical user interface on the monitors, while the built-in simulator offers realistic response to the operations initiated by each student. By utilizing both models of basic trainer, students' skills will be more flexible.

Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4533

Nearly identical in most ways to the Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4590 ($499.99 list, 4 stars) that I recently reviewed, the Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4533 ($399.99 list) adds Wi-Fi support that the WP-4590 lacks, but leaves out support for the PCL and PostScript printer languages that some offices require. Beyond that, it shares the same fast speed and good paper handling that makes both printers comparable to similarly priced lasers, and it offers the same low cost per page that makes them particularly attractive choices for micro and small offices and workgroups. The WP-4533 in particular is attractive enough to make it Editors' Choice.

Despite the $100 lower price for the WP-4533, it's best thought of as sharing the current top of the line spot for WorkForce Pro models. In essence, the WP-4590 is top of the line for offices that need PCL or PostScript in their printers, while the WP-4533 is top of the line for those that don't. Both printers, for example, offer identical MFP features. Both print, scan, and fax, including over a network; they both work as standalone copiers and fax machines; and both can scan to, but not print from, a USB key.

As with the WP-4590 also, the WP-4533 lets you print through the cloud. Connect to the Internet by way of a network, using either an Ethernet or WiFi connection in this case, and you can take advantage of Epson Connect Email Print, which assigns an email address to the printer, then lets you print a document by sending it as an email attachment.

Similarly, you can also print with Google Cloud Print and even print with Apple AirPrint if you have a WiFi access point on your network. (You can't connect directly to the printer with AirPrint). You won't find any mention of these two options in the material that comes with the printer, however. To find out how to use either choice, you have to go to Epson's Web site.

Paper Handling and Setup
The WP-4533's paper handling is better than you'll get with most similarly priced color laser MFPs. The 330 sheet paper capacity, divided into a 250-sheet drawer and 80-sheet multi-purpose tray, should be more than enough for most small offices, and the built-in duplexer (for printing on both sides of the page) is a welcome convenience. If you need more capacity, you can even add a second 250-sheet drawer ($99.99 list) for a total of 580 sheets.

For scanning, the WP-4533 offers a 30-page automatic document feeder (ADF) to supplement the letter-size flatbed. The ADF can scan legal-size pages as well as multipage documents, which is typical, but it also goes beyond that, adding the ability to scan in duplex by turning the page over when it scans. The duplexing options lets you copy both single- and double-sided originals to your choice of single- or double-sided copies.

Setup is absolutely standard fare. For my tests, I connected the WP-4533 by its Ethernet port and installed the driver and software on a Windows Vista system. The only potential issue is the size, since the paper handing capabilities require a relative large printer for an inkjet, at 15.1 by 18.1 by 16.5 inches (HWD).

Although that makes the printer a little large to comfortably share a desk with, and arguably a little large for most home offices, it's small enough so it should be an easy fit for a micro or small office. Also worth mention is that it weighs only 30.4 pounds, which makes it much lighter and easier to move around than comparable lasers.

Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4533

Speed and Output Quality
On our business applications I timed the printer (using QualityLogic's hardware and software), at an effective 6.0 pages per minute (ppm). Not surprisingly, that makes it essentially tied with the WP-4590, at 5.7 ppm using the Epson driver. (At these speeds, a 0.3 ppm isn't statistically significant.) It's also essentially tied with the Editors' Choice HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One ($299.99 direct, 4.5 stars) and faster than the comparably priced color laser Editors' choice Dell 1355cnw Multifunction Color Printer ($419.99 direct, 4 stars), which managed only 4.5 ppm.

As with the WP-4590, output quality is the only area where the WP-4533 behaves more like a typical inkjet than like a laser. Text quality is at the low end of the tight range where the vast majority of inkjets fall, which makes it good enough for most business purposes. Unless you have an unusual need for small fonts, you shouldn't have any complaints about it.

Graphics is absolutely par for an inkjet, which also makes it makes it good enough for any business needs, including PowerPoint handouts, for example. Depending on how critical an eye you have, you may also consider it good enough for output going to an important client when you need to convey a sense of professionalism.

Photo quality is at the upper end of the small range where the vast majority of inkjet MFPs fall, making it better than what you'd get with some drugstore prints and a lot better than you'll get from a color laser. For those businesses, like real estate offices, that need to print photos, that can be a welcome plus.

One other strong argument for the WP-4533 is its low cost per page. Based on ink cost and claimed yields for the cartridges, the running cost comes out to 1.6 cents for a monochrome page and 6.8 cents for a color page. That makes the WP-4533, along with WP-4590, one of the least expensive printers in this price range to print with. And that includes lasers as well as inkjets.

As I said about the WP-4590, the WP-4533 is one of the more impressive inkjets we've tested. Its speed, paper handling, and MFP features are all a match for comparably priced?and even more expensive?laser MFPs, and it offers everything a small office needs, including some notable extras like cloud printing. Clearly, if you must have PostScript or PCL, the WP-4590 will be your preferred choice. For the larger number of small offices that don't, however, the WP-4533 offers all the same capabilities plus WiFi at a lower price.

More generally, if you must have laser-quality text, you should also look at the Dell 1355cnw; and if you can benefit from a legal-size flatbed, you should look at the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus. However, the low cost per page for the Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4533 is enough to make it Editors' Choice also, along with both of those printers. And the more you print, the more you'll appreciate the savings.

BOISE, Idaho (AP) ? Idaho National Guard rescuers plucked a California fireman, his wife and their adult daughter from a snow-covered mountain-side Sunday afternoon, more than 15 hours after the trio survived a nighttime plane crash onto a steep, forested slope in a remote part of the state.

Authorities said the group was flying in a Cessna 172 from California to Mountain Home, Idaho, when the plane went down at about 9 p.m. MDT Saturday. One of the three used a cellphone just after midnight to report that they had survived the crash but had suffered head and back injuries.

A medical helicopter was the first to spot the wreckage Sunday morning, but white-out conditions didn't allow for an immediate rescue, said Col. Tim Marsano of the Idaho National Guard.

Officials said ground rescuers traveling through 6-foot snow drifts and on 60 degree slopes reached the crash site first. They wrapped the family members in blankets and built a fire until a military helicopter could lift them out with a hoist.

"It was inhospitable for a landing," Marsano said. "The use of the helicopter was indispensable for this type of rescue operation."

The three were flown one at a time to a landing area about a half-mile from War Eagle Mountain in southwest Idaho's Owyhee County.

The first person came out about noon and the last at about 2 p.m., and each was transferred to a medical helicopter and flown to Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise where they were listed in stable condition.

It's unclear what caused the Cessna to go down. Photos taken by rescuers showed significant damage, including a broken front windshield.

Authorities identified the three as Brian Brown of Wilton, Calif., his wife Jayann Brown, and their daughter. Her name was not immediately available.

Brian Brown is a captain at the Cosumnes Community Services District Fire Department in Elk Grove, Calif. He is also Deputy Chief of Operation and Training with the nearby volunteer Wilton Fire Protection District.

Wilton Fire Chief Tom Dark said the couple was flying with their youngest daughter to Mountain Home to visit their oldest daughter. He was relieved they were in stable condition.

"That was our first concern, how he and the family were doing," said Dark. "Knowing what a good pilot he is, something had to have happened."

Dark said it was probably an unusual experience for Brown, a firefighter for more than two decades, to be on the other end of a rescue.

"When the shoe is on the other foot it's kind of strange," he said.

Sasol launches new coal mining shaft in South Africa

EBR Staff Writer
Published 24 May 2012

Sasol has inaugurated its ZAR3.5bn ($423m) Thubelisha Shaft at the Twistdraai Colliery in Mpumalanga, South Africa.

The new shaft will be located in the north-east of the Secunda complex, and replace the current Twistdraai Colliery shaft system that has reached its economic limit.

Sasol Mining managing director Hermann Wenhold said the company has entered a period of intense capital replacement and will replace 60% of its operating capacity in Secunda in the next eight years.

"This capital replacement comes at a total cost of R14 billion," added Hermann.

"The Thubelisha shaft is the first milestone in this large scale project."

The shaft, will have a total conveyor belt length of 20km, and see surface buildings, coal conveyance infrastructure, workshops and a full shaft system.

Thubelisha will be destined to deliver more than 8 million tons per annum (mtpa) over a lifespan of 25 years, from a maximum of 12 coal production sections.

The company expects the new shaft will extend the life of the Twistdraai Colliery beyond 2039, and supply coal to Sasol Synfuels for its export and domestic business.

Capcom Teases Potential DmC Sequels - Explosion.com

Back in the 4th quarter of 2010, gamers were introduced to the mug shot of a scrawny figure with short, black hair donning a somewhat familiar red leather coat. At first glance of the rail thin and bruised up individual, it was obvious that Capcom and developer Ninja Theory had teamed up to introduce a new hero to the world of gaming; who this hero was, though, was a mystery that would quickly lead to a big surprise to Capcom fans.

At the Tokyo Game Show, an announcement trailer showcasing the youthful figure was displayed to the crowd. It was at that time that it was clear that Capcom was off its rocker ? the moody skeletal figure was none other than a reboot of the protagonist of the Devil May Cry series. Taking place in a parallel universe to Capcom?s highly successful hack and slash series, DmC: Devil May Cry would feature Dante as a slightly emo version of himself with all the same flair. Equipped with the trademark sword and dual pistols that headlined the series critically acclaimed combat, this new version of Dante would both confuse, excite, and disappoint fans of the original series.

Recently, Capcom came forward with an update on DmC: Devil May Cry to announce that, after nearly five years of development, the game would be ready for a January 15th, 2013 release date. Though offering no explanation as to why it couldn?t push the game forward one month to meet a holiday season release and maximize the games sales, the publisher did make one comment that, to most, may seem slightly premature.

In a conference with investors of the publishing company, chairman and CEO Kenzo Tsujimoto stated that Capcom aims to reduce the development cycle of all major titles to a mere 2.5 years. ?Speeding up development will probably raise the cost. But creating quality content will be vital to Capcom?s ability to survive by overcoming intense global competition,? Tsujimoto states. Speaking specifically of DmC, Tsujimoto continued by saying, ?Development [for DmC] will require five years due to the time needed to select development companies because of our decision to switch to external development, but our goal is to reduce the cycle to 2.5 years for subsequent titles in this series.?

Despite still having half a year before DmC actually releases, Capcom?s mention of subsequent releases in this new Devil May Cry series could be viewed as a sort of blind and arrogant optimism. Though the publisher has a hefty track record of highly successful releases, the development team behind DmC hasn?t been as prolific. Ninja Theory?s short, mediocre track record includes the PS3 exclusive Heavenly Sword, which succeeded simply by being the first moderately decent Playstation 3 game at the systems release; the average RPG Enslaved: Odyssey to the West; and the odd-ball, cult hit Kung Fu Chaos. Without Capcom?s own hands molding DmC, there?s still a heavy concern that the change in direction for Dante isn?t going to be the only shock on the January 15th release.

Individuals are a Part of Making an Effective, Self-Organized Team ...

In my last post, I took a stab at answering the question ?How do we change from individuals in workgroups to effect, self-organizing teams?? Through my discovery and reflection on that topic, I turned my focus towards the environment of the team. Now we know that environment is a big part, but the individuals do have an impact and over the years I?ve found some ideas that really impact how we as individuals can ensure we help the team become an effective, self-organized team.

  • Respect. It goes without saying that team members need to exhibit respect towards one-another. The idea of respect is often woven into an organization?s core values; however, it takes self-discipline to be sure we are treating each other with respect. It is sometimes said that at the end of an argument and or discussion, it is OK to agree-to-disagree as long as we all respect each other afterwards. Well, I would say ? show respect during the time of the argument and or discussion. If you do, you?ll often find a faster resolution and you?ll avoid that ?uncomfortable?, ?bad taste in mouth? after effect.
  • Embrace Diversity. It is often not fully appreciated to have a team made up of members from different backgrounds, but in my experience ? this is when the best results appear. Diversity can be demographic related or experience related, in all cases it simply comes back to learning. By listening to each other and sharing ideas, we learn from each other and inevitably, produce better and enjoy producing. One other by-product of leveraging cross-functional product teams, is of course diversity. The diversity of skill sets swarming on delivering a story helps do so faster with higher value and higher quality.
  • Trust. Trust is earned. It is primarily earned by doing what we say were going to do when we said we are going to do it. This is a huge challenge and we need to understand as individuals working in a team that a commitment you make reflects upon the team. Therefore, when we commit to completing work during an iteration and deliver on this commitment, we are establishing trust with the business. During our daily stand ups, when we are actionable about what we finished and what we plan to finish, we establish trust in the team.
  • Focus on Strengths. Much like embracing diversity, we must focus on the strengths of the team members and put each other in a position to succeed. We all-too-often look to improve our weaknesses either by taking on tasks that will force us to learn. Well there?s a difference between improving our skills and experiences, versus improving our weaknesses. A couple years ago, I wrote about how my team used Strengths Finder to better understand where each team member play?s best. From this point, we would define and divvy up work to get the iteration delivered based on our strengths. This became a very natural approach and team members had each other?s back when someone was playing outside their wheelhouse.
  • DO. I have often used the phrase ? have a ?will do attitude.? One of the best way of having teams form and self-organize is simply by doing. Do have the hard discussions. Do spend time with each other beyond work ? build teams. Do swarm. Do pair. Do work hard. Do have each other?s back. Do adjust when necessary. Do make a difference. Do encourage each other. Do make decisions. Do what you said your going to do. Do appreciate each other?s opinions. Do lead. Do follow. Do take time to reflect. Do step away when necessary.

Team WorkThese ideas and concepts are definitely not mind blowing, nor are they new. But, as I mentioned, these are the basics that I?ve seen work. What are some of the individual behaviors and or practices have you?ve seen or done that helped ensure your team self-organizes?

Chameleon KickStarter Could Bring the Ultimate Customization to Your Android Tablet?s Home Screen

One of my favorite things about the Android platform is the ability to customize the UI to fit your needs. There are literally hundreds of theme engines and thousand of themes to pick from, as well as thousands of widgets, live applications, and media feeds. I was browsing Kickstarter the other day when I came across Canadian group looking to raise $50K to get another Android home screen engine going. I looked a little deeper and soon realized that this was not quite the same as the other home screen managers that are currently available. This was so intriguing to me, that I was happy to throw down $10 in hopes that the project might actually get off the ground.

When tablets first came out, I really did not see a dying need to have one. Basically until then I used a laptop while on travel and used an MP3/Media player for music and movies on the go. They were pretty much a novelty for me until I got my hands on the original 7? Galaxy Tab. I found that in time it was my staple entertainment for travel, and it could be used almost as a dashboard for daily activities while at work and even at home.

With the larger real estate (compared to even the largest phone screens), you can put everything right in front of you on the home screen. Email, Calendar, Twitter/FB, Stocks, RSS, etc ; they can all be strategically placed right on the opening screen without the need to rifle through individual apps or cycle through different screens. As you probably know, the market is already flooded with these UI enhancements, and most apps come with some sort of widget. But until I saw Chameleon on Kickstarter, I never knew how perfect a home screen setup you could really have.

Chameleon is probably one of the coolest screen managers I have ever seen. With the ability to customize almost every single inch of screen real estate to your liking is something I would be very interested in using. So far over 3100 other backers think the same but if they don?t raise an additional $20K within the next 20 days then it?s looking like a good concept that never hit reality. To set it apart from similar software the focus was on both the productivity aspect, as well as making it look as aesthetically pleasing. From the looks of it so far, I think they have achieved that goal. However, it?s very unlikely to see the light of day if they don?t raise that last chunk of money.

What?s In It for You

Here are the perks offered by Teknision for depending on your donation:

$1 gets you the a big ?thanks? and probably some email updates of the project
$5+ you app before it hits the Google Play shelves
$10+ you the above plus a custom designed wallpaper pack
$50+ you get the above plus a ?backer? Chameleon T-shirt
$1000+ you get the above plus a 40? X 40? DNA11 custom painting
$5000+ gets the above, plus a Galaxy Tab with Chameleon pre-installed. No one has yet to take this route, which is understandable. $5K for a piece of software might be a bit much.

So whether you are unsure you need this or just a little interested, every little bit helps. Just to clarify, you?ll need a Honeycomb or newer device to run this, AND it has to be a resolution of 1280 X 800 or higher. I know, it?s a deal breaker for us early 7? adopters!

More devices are now hitting the higher than 1024 X 600 mark, so it should not be an issue for the newer generation tabs to hit those requirements. I hope that I get to run Chameleon on a device this year; I would love to add even more customization to my home screen than I already have now. If all goes well, we should see something hit our inboxes by August 2012. Hurry up though; if you are going to donate, time is short!
