I'm OK! Helps You Quickly Notify Many People In Case of Emergency [Webapp]

Adam Dachis ?I'm OK! Helps You Quickly Notify Many People In Case of EmergencyI'm OK! is a web and mobile app that helps you quickly notify many people that you're "OK" or you need help. All it takes is a text message and a hash tag or two to convey the important information you need to get across.

Once you sign up for I'm OK! you'll add your emergency contacts and receive a verification text message from a phone number you'll want to save. In an emergency situation, you'll send a text message to that number and your contacts will be notified almost immediately. The message can be anything you want, but sending #imok or #needhelp will register the correct status with the I'm OK! service and be more useful. Additionally, you can use the #loc hash tag to send latitude and longitude coordinates along with your message in case you need someone to come find you. Hopefully you won't ever have to actually use this service, but in times of disaster it could be very helpful.

I'm OK! works from pretty much any phone via SMS, but you can also download an app for Blackberry (see the instructions on their site).

The Mexico Caribbean Coast Could Give You A Cheap Family Holiday ...

The Mexico Caribbean Coast isn?t renowned as being the place to go for a cheap family holiday but in fact it is one of the few Caribbean Vacation Spots where you can take a family holiday and entertain your children without spending too much of your hard earned cash.

Flights to Cancun and all inclusive hotel prices have brought the Mexico Caribbean Coast within more family budgets than would have been believed possible ten years ago.

The question remains what do you do to entertain the children that won?t cost the earth outside the hotel. It seems a shame not to explore the Mexico Caribbean Coast when there is so much that is interesting to see and do, especially when you can do much of it relatively inexpensively, and yet keep the children entertained, educated, and happy.

If you want to see crocodiles, then go to Croco Cun at Puerto Mereles, and not only crocs at this zoo.

Go to north of Playa de Carmen to the Tres Rios Ecopark where you can float down a clear clean river all the way to the beach. It is a real all day activity centre with canoes, kayaks, bicycles, snorkels, or even horseback riding, or take a boat tour to the coral reef.

South of Playa de Carmen is Xcaret an eco archaeological park which has grown up around the Maya ruins of the port city of Pole, and there is a lot to be enjoyed here.

Bring bathers so you can snorkel in the underground rivers, and don?t worry life jackets are provided, and you can rent snorkels.

You can swim with the dolphins but it?s important to know that you need to get signed up early in the day for this.

There is a terrific butterfly exhibition in a canyon.

There is the ruins of the old Mayan port and also scale models in the museum.

You can ride on horseback through the jungle and on the beach.

Finally there is early evening entertainment for all the family.

Go to Akumel which is like a big warm bathtub with shallow water going out a long way, and a great place for rock pools. Older children can take their first steps to scuba diving, and snorkel, whilst mums and dads can go diving and have their children cared for.

Close to Akumel is the Aktun Chen Cave with plenty of stalactites and stalagmites.

The Xel-Ha Lagoon National Park is another unmissable treat with beach, snorkeling, archeology, and hiking. Lots to do and equipment to hire.

Tulum is the only real Mayan ruin overlooking the Caribbean Sea, and lots to look at, and you can then go for a swim on the beach below.

For the good swimmers go to Grand Cenote on the road to Coba, and when in Coba visit their Maya ruins.

If you are prepared to travel inland then the Maya Ruins of Chichen Iiza are a couple of hours away.

This has been just a few ideas, and there are many more things to do on your Mexico Caribbean Coast Vacation which could give you the best family holiday package ever.

Gordon Steven writes about Caribbean Vacation Spots as well as authoring several articles about Worldwide Vacation Spots and he recommends in Kenya Safaris.

On the web Fax ? What Makes It Different From Conventional Faxing?

Even though the differences between online fax and conventional faxing might be very obvious to those who have embraced this new technologies, but for people who are standing firmly behind their fax machine, some explanation is needed. The differences are so overwhelming, one could even question if the days of the fax machine are numbered.

For people who like the traditional, they do not have to worry since conventional faxing will always have its die-hard fans and will probably be around for many years to come. Even so, it?ll continue to lose out towards the much more contemporary on the internet fax services, primarily due to the fact of the differences between the two.

Perhaps, the main distinction will be the truth online fax connects/marries your messages along with your computers and also the World wide web. You?re essentially integrating your workplace communications along with your computers along with the web. And that as they say, has made all the difference within the world.

You and your business might be reached anytime, anywhere? you might be not just limited to the fax machine within the workplace. You can send and receive your messages wherever you might have access to the Net. This portability or mobility is among the major differences between the two methods. And this really is also one of the reasons why a lot of companies are converting or adding an on-line fax account to their business communications.

Another distinction has to do with resources and start-up expenses, online fax can be a type of cloud computing where these services are out-sourced to a third party online provider or server. You do not need a fax machine, you do not need to have a dedicated fax phone line and you don?t need any papers and inks. This is a paperless type of faxing which is a lot cheaper and far more convenient than traditional faxing.

You have to also recognize, given that your messages are sent as e-mail attachments, they are able to be easily stored and filed on your personal computer or inside your on the web account. It is possible to retrieve your faxes inside seconds, regardless in the event you received them yesterday or six months ago.

Higher security is another key distinction considering that your on the internet messages can be encrypted when you?re sending them. Plus, only you are able to log into your on-line account or interface together with your password. In the traditional method, any person can study a fax inside the office, even sensitive business communications.

In this new contemporary way of faxing, you can also confirm that your fax has been received. For time sensitive messages, this could be crucial for a lot of organizations, especially in the event you depend upon faxing to get in touch with clients and/or confirm deals or sales.

So the options are laid out for any enterprise, go having a traditional fax machine within the office, 1 that?s not private and normally limited to workplace hours. Or go with a modern faxing program that?s more private and connects your communications together with your computers and the web. One which is a lot more cost-effective and a lot more environmentally friendly than the conventional strategy. Additionally, you might have the selection between a portable mobile fax service that is offered anywhere and 1 which is confined to 1 location. But like all enterprise decisions, it is your call?

Reader condemns Canada?s role in attacks on Libya

Reader condemns Canada?s role in attacks on Libya

Dear Editor;

Mr. Harper, Mr. Rae, Mr Layton?I understand that there will be a vote in Parliament today to ?extend the mission? in Libya.

?

Firstly?to call this a ?mission? is obtuse. This is not a mission, it is a war against a sovereign nation that has threatened no one. When did a peace keeping nation like Canada decide that war was the way to ensure peace? Gadhaffi only did what our police did, under an obscure law, at the G20 in Toronto.

Canada and NATO are committing acts of genocide against innocent Libyans while justifying it as ?protecting the people from their leader?!! Some of the same ?logic? used in Afghanistan?to bring them democracy. There are thousands of Afghanis who will never know life again because of us.

It is truly sad that Canada has bought into the 1984 mind-set that is now being practiced on the planet. We as a country have no right to demand that another nation act the way we demand or be ?wiped off the map?! We have killed innocent people and yet act as if they are not as dead because they were not killed by their own leader??? When did our country lose its way??

I pray that our representatives have the courage of our convictions in this vote today. We do not want war. The planet is not a playground where ?my dad can beat your dad? mentality exists. We are supposed to be adults and work out any arguments without killing. I expected more of our country but I guess those days are gone. I cannot pretend I understand every reason for our behaviour, but sadly, it seems as if the planet is being herded to WWIII and Canada is helping lead the way. And we are killing innocent people for our own promotion. I guess it is true that people don?t matter, power does?

War is NOT Peace, and Freedom is not Slavery?when will our government realize that?

Housing society residents vow to resist shifting of hospital and ...

The original map for the society, which is controlled by the Lahore Development Authority (LDA), envisaged a school and hospital on a 9.5-kanal plot in Block B. PHOTO: EXPRESS

LAHORE:?

Residents of the Pak Arab Housing Society on Ferozepur Road say they will protest and even move court to stop the administration from converting areas reserved for a school and a hospital into residential or commercial plots.

The original map for the society, which is controlled by the Lahore Development Authority (LDA), envisaged a school and hospital on a 9.5-kanal plot in Block B. However, the administration is now planning to move the proposed buildings to Block E without consulting the residents.

Muhammad Kashif, a resident of B Block, said that the society had started dividing the 9.5-kanal space into 5-marla plots. ?I built my house here thinking that it would be convenient to send my children to this school nearby,? he said. ?Now my planning turns out to be useless because they are shifting the school.?

Kashif said that he and other residents of B Block had written to the society administration and the LDA but received no response. He said that the administration had told the residents that the LDA had approved their revised map. He said that the residents would protest and move the courts to obtain a stay order against the action. He also complained that the scheme of more than 3,000 plots had only one mosque that could accommodate about 100 people.

Moinuddin, the executive director of the society, said the LDA had yet to approve their plan to revise the map and denied that new plots had been marked out. ?We submitted the proposal to the LDA last year and are still waiting for approval,? he said,

He said that the society had started building a school on 4.5 kanals in E Block and had reserved areas for a park and a hospital next to it. He said that the shift was necessary because the road in B Block was already choked most of the time due to commercial activities. ?If we build the school and hospital there then that road will always be blocked,? he said.

Asked about the matter, officials at the LDA metropolitan planning wing said that Khalid Lodhi, the director who had been looking at the case, had been suspended from service a couple of days ago and they could not comment on the situation.

ICANN Approves Historic Change to Internet's Domain Name System ...

ICANN Approves Historic Change to Internet?s Domain Name System Board Votes to Launch New Generic Top-Level Domains

Singapore | ICANN?s Board of Directors has approved a plan to usher in one of the biggest changes ever to the Internet?s Domain Name System. The Board vote was 13 approving, 1 opposed, and 2 abstaining.

During a special meeting, the Board approved a plan to dramatically increase the number of Internet domain name endings ? called generic top-level domains (gTLDs) ? from the current 22, which includes such familiar domains as .com, .org and .net.

?ICANN has opened the Internet?s naming system to unleash the global human imagination. Today?s decision respects the rights of groups to create new Top Level Domains in any language or script. We hope this allows the domain name system to better serve all of mankind,? said Rod Beckstrom, President and Chief Executive Officer of ICANN.

New gTLDs will change the way people find information on the Internet and how businesses plan and structure their online presence. Internet address names will be able to end with almost any word in any language, offering organizations around the world the opportunity to market their brand, products, community or cause in new and innovative ways.

?Today?s decision will usher in a new Internet age,? said Peter Dengate Thrush, Chairman of ICANN?s Board of Directors. ?We have provided a platform for the next generation of creativity and inspiration.?

The decision to proceed with the gTLD program follows many years of discussion, debate and deliberation with the Internet community, business groups and governments. The Applicant Guidebook, a rulebook explaining how to apply for a new gTLD, went through seven significant revisions to incorporate more than 1,000 comments from the public. Strong efforts were made to address the concerns of all interested parties, and to ensure that the security, stability and resiliency of the Internet are not compromised.

ICANN will soon begin a global campaign to tell the world about this dramatic change in Internet names and to raise awareness of the opportunities afforded by new gTLDs. Applications for new gTLDs will be accepted from 12 January 2012 to 12 April 2012.

London to Australia in just over 3 hours

The world's first hypersonic passenger jet has been unveiled, promising flights from London to Sydney in just over three hours.

THE world's first hypersonic passenger jet has been unveiled, and it could get from Melbourne to London in under 3.5 hours

Hailed as the new Concord, rocket engines currently used in missiles will propel the plane to speeds of 5029km/h - more than four times the speed of sound, the Daily Mail reports.

But passengers are going to have to wait 40 years for the first commercial flight, say developers EADS.

Dubbed ZEHST - which stands for Zero Emission Hypersonic Transportation ? the jet will be propelled by a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen, meaning its only emission would be water.

It can carrying up to 100 passengers and will use conventional jet engines to launch the aircraft from the airport runway. Once airborne, a pair of rocket engines will be engaged, followed by a final set of engines known as ramjets.

The design was unveiled at the Paris Air Show.

?It is not a Concorde but it looks like a Concorde, showing that aerodynamics of the 1960s were already very smart,? Jean Botti, innovation and technology director at EADS, told the Daily Mail.

?We?ve been working on this project for long enough now to know it is viable.?

Dell S500wi

Interactive projectors are becoming increasingly common, but the Dell S500wi ($1599 direct) stands out for being one of the few that combines interactivity with an ultra short throw. Built in interactivity lets you interact with the image without needing a separate, and expensive, interactive whiteboard. The ultra short throw lets you project a big image from just a few inches from the screen, making it easy to avoid shadows. The combination makes the S500wi particularly attractive.

The S500wi isn't the first interactive ultra-short-throw projector we've reviewed. That honor went to the Editors' Choice Epson BrightLink 450Wi ($2,199, 4.5 stars). However it's the first one built around a DLP chip, which makes it the first to take advantage of TI's version of interactive technology.

Beyond that, it offers a fairly common set of features for a data projector today, with WXGA (1,280 by 800) resolution and a 3,200-lumen brightness rating. The combination is a good potential fit for a small to medium-size conference room or classroom.

The Basics
The projector measures 7.5 by 12.9 by 16.6 inches (HWD) and weighs 15.6 pounds, which is a clear indication that it's meant primarily for permanent installation. Because the interactive feature doesn't need calibration, however, you can also put the projector on a cart, easily move it from room to room, and still be able to set it up quickly when you need it.

For permanent installations, you'll typically want to mount the projector on the wall above the area you're using for a screen, so it projects down. This positioning has the advantage of tending to hide any shadows.Your arm reaching out to the screen, for example, will tend to.be in a position to hide the shadow from the arm.

Setup is standard fare for an interactive projector, with a suitably wide choice of connection options for data and video. The S500wi offers an HDMI port for either a computer or video source, two VGA inputs for computers or component video, a pass-through VGA port for a monitor, both composite video and S-Video inputs, and support for a WiFi connection. It can also read jpg and ptg files from a USB memory key and accept data through a USB or LAN connection.

Big Picture from Inches Away

The big attraction for any ultra-short-throw projector is its ability to throw big images from short distances. For my tests, I measured a 63-inch wide image (75 inches diagonal at 1,280 by 800) with the front of the projector just 5 inches from the screen.

That's a little less amazing that it might seem only because the lens is near the back of the projector, pointing towards a mirror that reflects the image back to the screen. The mirror was about 19 inches from the screen in my tests. More generally Dell's stated range for the projection distance, as measured from the mirror, is 19.2 to 25.8 inches from the screen for a diagonal image size of 77 to 100 inches.

Interactivity and 3D
The interactivity worked in my tests as promised to let me draw, highlight, and otherwise interact with the image. In case you don't have one already, Dell provides an interactive program, as well as one interactive pen, or wand, but the projector should work with any interactive software.

TI's interactive technology works by projecting a grid on the image that's invisible to the human eye, but visible to the pen. The grid works much like lines of latitude and longitude on a map, so the pen can report what it's pointing at in terms of the grid. One advantage of this approach is that it eliminates the need to calibrate the pen. Another is that the pen only has to see the screen rather than touch it, so you can use literally any surface as a screen. You can even use things like cinderblock, which might harm a stylus, or a freshly painted wall, which might be harmed by a stylus. The feature also frees you up to move around the room. In my tests the pen worked from more than 30 feet away, although controlling it with any precision is pretty much impossible from more than a few feet.

The 3D also worked as promised, although the promise is limited in this case. For my tests, I connected it to a Blu-ray player by way of an Optoma 3D-XL ($400 street, 4 stars). By itself, the projector will work only with a computer with a Quadbuffered, Open GL 3D-compatible graphics card. It won't work directly with a Blu-ray player or the 3D from your cable provider or the equivalent. However you can't count this against the projector, since these limitations apply to all current inexpensive projectors with 3D, including, for example, the Optoma TW610ST ($1,000 street, 4 stars).

Image Quality and Other Issues
The S500wi scored well on image quality for data images, sailing through our standard DisplayMate tests without any problems worth mention.

Image quality for video was far less watchable, which is a common issue for data projectors, including the 450Wi. Even more than most data projectors, however, the S500wi had a problem with shadow detail, losing detail in dark areas even in scenes that most projectors don't have any problems with, and turning large areas of the screen into solid black in scenes that tend to cause the problem. I'd call the projector useable for short clips, but nothing more than that.

I also saw a significant rainbow effect with video, with light areas in the image turning into little red-green-blue rainbows when I shifted my gaze or an object moved on screen. The rainbow effect is a potential issue for any single-chip DLP projector, but some projectors tend to show it more easily than others. The S500wi showed very little rainbow effect with data screens, so it shouldn't cause any problems even for people who are sensitive to the effect, as I am. With video, however, the rainbows show often enough so anyone who's sensitive to the effect will likely find it annoying for anything by short clips.

One final plus for the projector is its built-in stereo audio system. The 5-watt speakers put out enough volume to fill a large conference room or classroom, and they offer far better sound quality than most projectors.

Ultimately, the S500wi offers an impressive list of features at a surprisingly low price. The features?ultra short throw, interactivity, high-quality data images, 3D support, and even a quality sound system?make it a highly attractive choice. The price, meanwhile, makes it particularly easy to recommend.

Casey Anthony trial: Witness refutes duct tape as murder weapon (The Christian Science Monitor)

A world-renowned forensic pathologist testified on Saturday at the Casey Anthony murder trial that duct tape found near the remains of Ms. Anthony?s 2-year-old daughter were not affixed to her face until after the child was already dead.

?I think the duct tape was a later event, not an early event,? Dr. Werner Spitz told the jury. He added that it was introduced ?after decomposition.?

The testimony is significant because it is in direct opposition to the prosecution?s theory that Casey Anthony killed her daughter, Caylee, by smothering her with pieces of duct tape pressed firmly over the toddler?s nose and mouth.

Take the Monitor's weekly news quiz! June 13-17

It also clashes with the findings of Orange County Medical Examiner Dr. Jan Garavaglia, who ruled Caylee?s death a homicide and concluded that the duct tape had been affixed to her face before her death.

His testimony came on Day 22 of Anthony?s trial in an Orlando, Fla., courtroom. She is charged with first-degree murder and faces a death sentence if convicted.

Dr. Spitz has been involved in some of the country???s highest-profile death investigations, including the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., and the O.J. Simpson murder trial.

Spitz said he concluded that the duct tape was applied after decomposition because investigators found no DNA evidence such as pieces of skin on what had been the sticky side of the tape. He said skin would be expected if the tape was pressed firmly into a living person???s face.

???It is my opinion that the duct tape was stuck on there after the skin deteriorated, after the skin decomposed,??

?How did this person put duct tape on the skull,? asked prosecutor Jeffrey Ashton in a disbelieving and dismissive tone of voice.

Spitz responded with his own sarcasm. ?They took a piece of duct tape in a roll ? it comes in a roll ? and tore off a number of sections, maybe this long, and stuck them on the skull,? Spitz said. He said it may have been done to hold the lower jaw in place and to keep the skull intact.

Spitz also accused the medical examiner in the Anthony case, Dr. Garavaglia, of conducting a ?shoddy autopsy? on Caylee?s remains. He said he was shocked to discover that Garavaglia had neglected to examine the interior of the toddler?s skull.

???The skull, the head, is part of the body, and when you do an autopsy you examine the whole body,??

Prosecutor Ashton asked Spitz whether there is a written protocol requiring medical examiners to inspect the interior of a skull. ???Where is this protocol published???

The pathologist, who said he?d assisted or conducted 60,000 autopsies during his 56-year career, said examination of the skull is routine practice among medical examiners.

?That tells me about a shoddy autopsy,? Spitz said. ?Excuse me for the term, but you provoked it,? he said to Mr. Ashton.

?I didn?t mean to provoke you,? Ashton replied.

?It upsets my better understanding of my profession that someone would do an autopsy and not examine the head,? Spitz said.

Spitz said an examination of the interior of the skull revealed how the head was positioned as it decomposed. He also said a discoloration of interior skull bones, if observed, could reveal evidence that the individual had died of suffocation.

Suffocation is the prosecution?s theory of how Caylee died. Spitz said his examination of the skull showed no evidence of suffocation.

Spitz testified that he also disagreed with Garavaglia?s conclusion that Caylee?s death could be classified as a homicide. He said there was not enough information to render a scientific opinion on the manner of death.

Suicide could be ruled out, he said. But he could not rule out the possibility of natural causes, homicide, or an accident.

Also on Saturday, Judge Bevin Perry threatened to impose sanctions on defense attorney Jose Baez after Mr. Baez asked an earlier witness, forensic anthropologist Dr. William Rodriguez, to offer his opinion about the interaction of a decomposing body with duct tape.

The prosecution objected to the line of questioning, saying the issue had not been identified and disclosed to prosecutors in a pretrial report. Judge Perry had required both sides in the case to file reports identifying the potential testimony of all expert witnesses. The requirement is designed to prevent ambush tactics during the trial.

Baez said the witness?s testimony was intended to answer an animated video shown to the jury suggesting how the duct tape could have been placed over Caylee?s mouth and nose at the same time.

Dr. Rodriguez was prepared to testify that, under the circumstances and conditions at the wooded site where Caylee?s skeletal remains were recovered, it would be impossible to draw a ?scientific conclusion as to the portion of the duct tape around the area of the eyes, nose, and mouth, or just the mouth.?

Rather than excluding the testimony, Judge Perry ordered that the witness be questioned by both defense and prosecution lawyers Saturday afternoon away from the courtroom. Rodriguez will likely return to the stand on Monday.

Less clear is whether Judge Perry will impose sanctions against Baez. ?I will reserve the decision whether to proceed with contempt proceedings at the conclusion of this trial,? the judge said.

The trial is set to continue on Monday morning.

Ex-Colonial Bank exec gets 8 years in TBW fraud (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? A former bank executive who served as the go-between for Taylor, Bean & Whitaker Mortgage Corp, which collapsed from a $2.9 billion fraud scheme, was sentenced on Friday to eight years in federal prison.

Catherine Kissick, 50, who was the head of Colonial Bank's mortgage warehouse lending division, pleaded guilty in March to one count of conspiracy to commit bank, securities and wire fraud. She received the longest prison sentence so far related to the TBW investigation.

Kissick was the primary contact point for TBW's chairman, Lee Farkas, and helped devise plans that enabled the mortgage institution to sell loans that did not exist or had already been sold to other banks or investors.

Colonial Bank ended up advancing money to TBW for the loans. They came up with the scheme to help address constant overdrafts by TBW which resulted from massive losses by the firm, according to prosecutors.

While Kissick knew that their actions were fraudulent, she testified they continued out of fear that it would be detected. However, she sought to secure additional collateral from TBW in a bid to minimize the bank's exposure, prosecutors said.

"She was fully aware that her actions were fraudulent and she worked closely with Farkas in carrying out the fraud scheme," prosecutors said in their sentencing recommendation to District Judge Leonie Brinkema.

She had faced up to 30 years in prison. Prosecutors had recommended that she be sentenced to 11 years in prison.

Also sentenced was one of Kissick's assistants, Teresa Kelly, who worked at Colonial Bank as an operations supervisor and processed many of the transactions of fake mortgage sales. She was sentenced to three months in prison, followed by nine months of house arrest.

Colonial Bank, a unit of Colonial BancGroup Inc (CBCDQ.PK) was one of the largest U.S. banks before it collapsed. The bank and the mortgage company TBW filed for bankruptcy in August 2009, after which authorities began to uncover the fraud.

As losses mounted at TBW, the firm tried to drum up capital to help Colonial Bank win $553 million in funding from the federal bank bailout program known as the Troubled Asset Relief Program, prosecutors said. No money was disbursed.

The case represents a big victory for the Obama administration which has been under pressure to prosecute senior executives who were responsible for the U.S. housing market collapse, which touched off a deep recession.

Farkas is due to be sentenced on June 27, though the government has not yet said what they plan to recommend.

Last week, two of his key lieutenants were given their prison sentences. Former TBW treasurer Desiree Brown was sentenced to six years in prison and former TBW president Raymond Bowman to 30 months.

The 15 Most Intense Movie Moments

Everyone's sure to have their own idea about what's the most "intense" movie experience: for some it's speed, for others action; it could be white-knuckle-terror, fear or good old-fashioned disbelief at what's happening before their eyes. Still, just as many intense movie moments have come from high-wire suspense, high-stakes drama, or emotional tugs on the heartstrings. Here are 15 of our most memorable.

Martin Scorsese's a master of intensity and picking a single scene above others is a tough call. Joe Pesci's funny guy turn in GoodFellas? Any given headshot in The Departed? Nic Cage pinballing through the city in Bringing Out the Dead? All great but it's 1976's Taxi Driver that haunts most. In his signature role, Robert De Niro creeps us out with his tough-guy mirror talk and when he first appears with his mohawk haircut. The porno theater date's pretty uncomfortable, too. But this is all prelude to the tendon-tightening finale, which starts when he gut-shoots Harvey Keitel and heads into the hotel on a homicidal rampage.

Danny Boyle's 1996 kinetic adaptation of Irvine Welsh's book about Scottish drug addicts is filled with intense moments, starting with the joyous anarchy of its opening sequence in which junkies flee the filth to Iggy Pop's "Lust For Life." But the bit that's close to unwatchable has anti-hero Renton withdrawing from heroin and hallucinating the reanimation of his dead mate's baby. Drugs? Just say no... thanks, maaaannn.

It's no understatement to say that all of Tod Browning's 1932 masterpiece is intense. His gallery of real-life freaks have never been equaled in cinematic history. Nor are they likely to. Unless John Waters somehow gets his hand on radioactive material and a human cloning kit. Anyway, the conclusion to Freaks, in which the deformed and the diminutive take grisly revenge on a truly ugly beauty, remains shocking today. It's a tarring and feathering to leave even hardened viewers' guts shaken and stirred.

Quentin Tarantino's films present a similar problem to Scorcese's in that they reliably turn the intensity up to 11. The cinematic inferno of Inglourious Basterds? John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson blasting away at Brett in Pulp Fiction? The Bride slashing her way through the Crazy 88 in Kill Bill Vol. 1? Muscle car meets girl head in Death Proof? All strong contenders but we're going with 1992's Reservoir Dogs' three-way shoot-out between Mr. White, Nice Guy Eddie and Joe. After a film-long build up of tension, things end with multiple bangs -- and an audience blown through the back of the cinema.

Next year marks the 40th anniversary of Bernardo Bertolucci's ground-breaking erotic film in which Marlon Brando tangles with young Maria Schneider in an affair predicated on anonymous sex. The most intense moment comes when anal rape made its art house debut, abetted by a stick of butter. Even in the porn-saturated present day, it's still uncomfortable viewing. Schneider, who died earlier this year, certainly didn't get over it. "That scene wasn't in the original script," she said in 2007. "The truth is it was Marlon who came up with the idea. I should have called my agent or had my lawyer come to the set because you can't force someone to do some thing that isn't in the script. I was crying real tears. I felt humiliated and, to be honest, I felt a little raped. Thankfully, there was just one take. I never use butter to cook anymore -- only olive oil."

United recovering from canceled, delayed flights (AP)

CHICAGO ? A five-hour computer outage that virtually shut down United Airlines Friday night and early Saturday is a stark reminder of how dependent airlines have become on technology.

Passengers saw their flight information vanish from airport screens, and thousands were stranded as United canceled 36 flights and delayed 100 worldwide.

The airline still had no explanation Saturday afternoon for the outage. But things could have been much worse.

A blizzard in the Northeast wiped out more than 10,000 flights over three days in December, a mid-January storm led airlines to cancel nearly 9,000 flights.

Friday's shutdown occurred late enough in the day that many of the canceled flights were the last planes out for the day, said Henry Harteveldt, an airline analyst with Forrester Research. On a Monday morning, the results could have been catastrophic.

"It happened as a lot of the airline was going to sleep for the night," Harteveldt said.

That doesn't mean affected travelers were happy.

"I'm just amazed at how catastrophic the failure was," said Jason Huggins, 35, who was trying to fly home to Chicago after a week working at his software company's San Francisco headquarters. "All the computer screens were blank, just showing the United logo."

Huggins paid $1,200 to book one of the last three seats left on an American Airlines flight home.

Social workers Penny Nordstrom, 57, and Emily Schaefer, 42, who were trying to get home from Cancun, Mexico, to Spirit Lake, Iowa, said their delays started with a computer problem at midday Friday in Mexico.

"We're way past 24 hours now," Nordstrom said about noon Saturday before she boarded a rebooked flight from Chicago O'Hare International Airport to Detroit for a connection to Sioux Falls. She expected to get home about midnight but hoped her travel insurance would offer some compensation.

United spokesman Charles Hobart said late Saturday afternoon that the airline didn't expect to cancel any more flights this weekend due to the computer problems, though delays might continue.

Business travelers are usually hurt less by such disruptions than people flying for vacation or personal reasons because airlines first help passengers with elite status in frequent flier programs and those who bought more-expensive, unrestricted tickets.

Jon Ryan, who had planned to fly nonstop from San Francisco to London on business Friday evening, was rebooked on partner airline Air Canada after two hours on the phone. His new itinerary: San Francisco to Toronto to Halifax to London.

"The poor, poor ticket agents were just bewildered and sitting behind the counter. Everybody was just staring and didn't know what to do," Ryan said. "The line grew and grew and then people went from sitting down to lying down."

On a typical day, United, a subsidiary of United Continental Holdings Inc., cancels 15 to 30 flights for reasons ranging from fog to maintenance problems or staffing shortages. Those are understandable. Passengers and others said a computer glitch should not have grounded the airline.

"They're infrequent, but the fact that they happen at all is puzzling. These are mission-critical," said airline analyst Robert Mann. "The idea that they would fail is troubling."

College student Jamela Wilson, on her way from Los Angeles home to Roanoke, Va., was curled inside of her hoodie sweatshirt at a gate in Chicago Saturday after an overnight wait.

"I don't know what happened, but it shouldn't have impacted me to the point I'm not home right now. It's a good 12 hours later," Wilson said.

Mary Clark, a United spokeswoman, said she couldn't say how many passengers were delayed or how many still needed to reach their destination by midday Saturday. About the outage itself, she and other airline personnel said only that it was caused by "a network connectivity issue."

Airlines rely on computers today more than ever. Reservations and customer service are largely automated, even flight paths are increasingly computer-generated. Most passengers are asked to check-in online, at airport kiosks or via mobile phone ? not with an agent ? and paper tickets are a thing of the past.

Airplanes also are flying fuller this summer than ever before. United's were 86.8 percent booked on average in May, which in reality meant many flew without a single empty seat. So rebooking passengers from canceled flights is much trickier and more time-consuming than in the past.

United and Continental merged in May 2010. They are slowly integrating their systems but still operate independently. So Continental was able to dispatch flights normally, though some of its airport kiosks were affected.

Naveena and Vidya Maddali's Continental flight from Seattle into O'Hare arrived on time at 5:30 a.m. Saturday. But their connecting United flight to Saginaw, Mich., was delayed repeatedly and then canceled. With the earliest flight at 1 p.m., the software engineers were fairly sure they would miss the noon high school graduation party they were traveling to attend.

"The whole purpose of the trip got ruined because of the delays," said Naveena Maddali, 27.

The couple was particularly frustrated United didn't provide more information sooner because they initially had enough time to rent a car to finish their trip.

Dave Sertich, 29, a financial analyst who lives in San Francisco, slept in a chair at an O'Hare gate Friday night but said many people had it worse. He was just puzzled by the lack of information from the airline.

"There were no agents around, no communication to passengers about what was going on, no announcements," Sertich said.

United passengers flying the rest of the weekend have been advised to print out their boarding pass at home instead of at airport kiosks in case of continuing backlogs. By 3 a.m. Eastern time, United had announced on Twitter that things were returning to normal: "Flight status and flight rebooking are fully refreshed on united.com. Thanks again for your patience." Officials did not elaborate.

The airline's customer service line at O'Hare was only four passengers long by noon, and United was letting people with tickets for travel Saturday change them for free to alleviate the crunch.

Seven French children hospitalised by E. coli outbreak (AFP)

LILLE, France (AFP) ? Seven children were hospitalised in France with E. coli infections after eating meat that may have been imported from Germany, but health authorities said there was no link to a similar bacteria outbreak there.

The children, aged from 20 months to eight years old, had eaten defrosted hamburgers made by the French company SEB which said the meat was taken from animals slaughtered in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, and processed in France.

The cases come after a major E. coli outbreak that killed 39 people -- all in Germany except for one woman who died in Sweden after visiting Germany -- and sickened 3,300 people in 16 countries.

Doctor Michel Foulard of the University Hospital Centre where the children were being treated in Lille, northern France, said one of them was in critical condition.

Officials said the infection was a rare strain of the E. coli bacteria but was not linked to the similar outbreak in Germany.

"There's meat from Germany, there's meat from Belgium and from Holland" in the burgers, SEB chief executive Guy Lamorlette told AFP.

"There are several suppliers. We will have to await the test results to say which is contaminated."

Six of the children were hospitalised on Wednesday and a seventh on Thursday, authorities said. They came from different towns in France's Nord region, but there were no connections between them.

The "Steak Country" burgers were bought in French branches of German supermarket Lidl. SEB said it had recalled them and Lidl said it had removed them from its shelves in France.

Regional Health Agency (ARS) officials in Lille said the children suffered from bloody diarrhoea, a symptom that also struck victims of the outbreak in Germany which has been blamed on infected bean sprouts.

They also became anaemic quickly and blood transfusions were required for four of the children. Three others suffer from renal failures severe enough to require dialyses, said Foulard.

"We are certain that this is not the same strain as the bean sprouts in Germany," ARS head Daniel Lenoir, told reporters in Lille, however.

The children suffer from a syndrome that "may be the source of an acute renal failure", the ARS said, adding that the bacteria was a "rare type" which produces dangerous "Shiga" toxins.

"This food poisoning...may be very serious," said ARS medical advisor Joelle Perrin, after another official earlier in the day said the cases were "serious but not worrying".

In Brussels, the European Commission said it had been informed of the outbreak but "the origin of the meat has not been confirmed", said Frederic Vincent, spokesman for Health Commissioner John Dalli.

"There's no need to compare with Germany, because this isn't the same strain of the E. coli bacteria. This is different, even if it's as strong," Vincent said.

SEB boss Lamorlette said that the origin of the illness had yet to be confirmed.

"I'm not saying it's false (that the contamination came from the burgers), just that for now nothing is confirmed. It's a possibility, that's all. We have to await the test results before saying anything."

Lamorlette insisted that the suspicious meat had been subjected to stringent tests and declared fit for human consumption, suggesting consumer negligence such as under-cooking or refreezing could be to blame.

Belgian health authorities on Thursday denied the country was behind the toxic meat exports "but other European countries".

Samsung Electronics, Hynix tumble on Q2 earnings worries (Reuters)

SEOUL (Reuters) ? Key South Korean technology stocks Samsung Electronics and Hynix Semiconductor lost ground on Friday as the earnings outlook for the world's No.1 and 2 memory chip makers continued to worsen.

Shares in Samsung Electronics were down 4.8 percent at 807,000 won as of 1:42 a.m. EST, compared with the broader market's 1.12 percent loss.

Morgan Stanley was the day's top seller of Samsung Electronics shares, according to Korean Exchange data.

"The stock market overall is hysterical right now on the latest negative global economic developments, and appetite for riskier, more cyclical plays is evaporating rapidly," said Chung Yun-sik, chief investment officer at ING Investment Management.

"The technology sector is being hit the hardest, as its earnings outlook has continued to deteriorate," Chung added.

Traders said memory chip prices were on a downward trend despite market expectations of a pickup earlier this quarter.

The U.S. Philadelphia semiconductor index has tumbled 16 percent since mid-February.

Samsung Electronics' second quarter operating profit is forecast to be around 4 trillion won ($3.66 billion), Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S data showed, compared to 5 trillion won a year ago.

Analysts said earnings expectations were being further downgraded.

"We recently lowered our second quarter operating profit forecast on Samsung Electronics to 3.6 trillion won," said Jin Seong-hye, an analyst at Hyundai Securities.

Hynix Semiconductor Inc shares slid 6.45 percent to 28,300 won, after local brokerage Korea Investment & Securities on Friday lowered its 12-month target price on Hynix to 39,000 from the previous 42,000 won.

The world's No.2 memory chip maker is seen posting a 553.28 billion won operating profit for the quarter ending in June, according to Thomson Reuters' I/B/E/S, compared with a 1 trillion won operating profit a year earlier.

"I cut my consensus forecast (for Hynix's second-quarter earnings) to 420 billion won, but I am also hearing talk in the market of 360 billion won," said James Song, an analyst at HI Investment & Securities.
