As the Leaves Begin to Fall My Pen Furiously Writes in the Names ...

We are now in the full throws of summer. ?It is hot here in Florida so I find myself hiding in the air conditioned comfort of my office more often during the day. ?As I gaze out of the window and what the children playing down the street, I discover my mind turning away from lesson plans for the new school year and toward the cooler evenings of fall when my time is more leisurely and my energies renewed.
While I work on my genealogy year round, I have found that I seem to be most productive in the cooler evenings of the autumn. ?My thoughts naturally seem to turn to family during those days leading up to the winter holidays. ?We celebrate Christmas with many of our inherited German traditions. ?It is a time devoted to family so I guess it is a natural for my mind to look to our ancestors as the weather begins to cool.
An early morning walk in the brisk cool air awakens memories of long-ago walks with mom and dad, or rushing out the door into a cool clear morning unable to wait for the day to start so I could partake in some urgently desired activity, like gossiping with a girl friend or fishing off the neighbor?s dock.
As the sun sinks into the western horizon earlier those days, there seems more time to sit quietly and reflect. ?There is no need to squeeze another activity into a long summer day, or spend just a little more time outside, before losing the sun. ?And lamplight is so much more flattering to this aging face. ?With the wonderful new lighting available, my eyes feel little strain as I look over a document for the hundredth time, knowing I missed something, but unable to discern what it is.
But perhaps the best of all is that this is the time when the children come home. ?They bring grandbabies to sit and listen to the stories I have to tell. ?We share the adventures of each other?s lives and reminisce about those of others, long since gone but, thanks to the research and determination of this old lady, never to be forgotten.

As I enter the late fall of my life, I realize the wonders of the slower paced quiet days that come with the fall evenings in our homes. ?I relish those cooler days when I don?t have to worry if I am ready for a bathing suit, or if the shorts draw eyes to the newest vein at the back of my knee. ?In this season of my life, genealogy is taking a front seat on the rest of the trip as I rush madly through the archives and digital databases to uncover just one more name, one more connection, that I can leave to my children and grandchildren, in the hope that in their season they will take up where I leave off.
