A Few Things to Consider when it Comes to Travel Insurance

travel insurance

Most travelers know that they should have some form of travel insurance before setting out on their trip, but they may not know many of the details inherent within typical travel insurance policies. This post will outline and explain some of the more common features. Remember to always read the fine print before taking out a policy and also keep in mind that your policy may not reflect the points below.

Deductible

The deductible is the amount of money you must pay out of pocket before your travel insurance company starts to cover the cost. Deductible amounts vary, but I?ve found that $100 is fairly typical. Keep in mind, this amount may change significantly depending on whether you are seeking international travel insurance or domestic. The amount can also vary based on the country in which you are a permanent resident.

Medical expenses that aren?t covered

Did you know that there are medical emergencies that many travel insurance companies won?t cover at all? Take for example an injury that occurs while you are intoxicated ? in this case, the travel insurance company will rule that you are disqualified from coverage because you were under the influence of a substance. This is a good reason to be extra careful if you do any drinking during your travels. Also, if you are planning on doing any extreme or adventure sports, make sure to check your policy to see if you are covered. There are some companies that specialize in this type of coverage, while others won?t help you out at all. Again, make sure to read the fine print!

Documentation

Let?s say you have to be hospitalized for an injury or an illness during your trip. The good news is that all the expenses may be covered by your travel insurance company. They won?t pay for any of it though if you don?t have proper documentation proving that you were hospitalized. Make sure you save all records and receipts from doctors, clinics and hospitals. The more thorough your documentation, the quicker your claim will be processed and the sooner you will be reimbursed.

There are lots of different companies providing travel insurance, World Nomads and Good2Go travel insurance being two examples. Whichever company you decide on, make sure to read over the policy and ask any questions you have before purchasing. This is a good way to get familiar with what?s covered and what isn?t, and it?s also a great way to get a sense for that company?s customer service.
