What are the odds of surviving cancer after a bone marrow transplant?

Hi i have had Hodgkin?s lymphoma three different times i took chemotherapy than a year later it relapsed and then a year later i had radiation and then another year later it relapsed again and my only choice was a stem cell transplant which i am told is pretty much the same thing and i am a firm believer in it i am going on two and a half years in remission, the transplant its self has some really strong chemotherapy but it is sooo amazing how it works. My doctor told me that the cancer will probably return but she said it will probably take eight to ten years and that is alot better than every year, which is great to me i am only 27 and i have four children so my advice to you and your father is to do it!!! I think it is defiantly worth it, it will be hard it is not an easy road but he can do and i wish you nothing but the best of luck to you and your father he can do it just hang in there good luck!!!! hope this helps

I don?t know the odds of surviving cancer after a bone marrow transplant but they do increase and also one of the key factors is a positive attitude don?t think of how many years because that puts more stress on just think positive that he?ll be fine and live for a long time yet just keep him positive and laughing

The odds are pretty good and getting better all the time. The best part is that even stage four lymphoma (some types) are now curable with stem cell or bone marrow transplants. Make sure you dad goes to a major cancer center that does lots of SCT or BMT and he should do just fine. He might have some lingering graft vs host disease but that sure beats stage four lymphoma.

I believe that your father would have to be in remission to have a transplant. Chances of pulling through the transplant is different for everyone. Some people may reject the transplant (graft v?s host) some may get a fatal infection, or there is a chace the cancer will return before the transplant is working correctly. Obviously some breeze through with no complications to live a full and healthy life.

Get some expert opinions too, its nice to hear other peoples experiences but a health professional will give you the best advice for your fathers condition

According to all the literature I?ve researched, your dad has an excellent chance of a cure after a bone marrow transplant. My advice to you would be to research the facility where he would go for his transplant. Also, check the education and residencies of the doctors that will be associated with the transplant. Most of the data is on the Internet. If you don?t like what you see, check out another facility. The important thing to remember is that it?s his life, and he has the right to choose.
